Matt Uren finally achieved his well deserved (and long overdue) coming-out party in this game..............meanwhile, Will Finch looked poised and mature beyond his years, in his QB playoff debut - and will only get better.
Now if the Mustangs can get a healthy Sanvido back for the Mac game, along with a (hopefully) healthy O-line, Coach Marshall's right, they really do match up pretty well with the Marauders.

Why was Sanvido, the nation's top rushing back, not dressed for the game ?
Did he not just need 1 more (regular season) rushing yard to reach the rare (in CIS football) 1,000 yd benchmark ?
Seems odd that nothing has been said about this.............is he injured ?

Quite the turnaround for Finch..........from throwing 4 interceptions last week, to 4 touchdown passes this week.

You would think both Varga and Yale would have thoroughly researched the NCAA and Ivey League international transfer rule for student athletes before he joined the Bulldogs this football season.

In Canadian football, the QB is everything............Mac's QB is Mr Everything.
However the Western offence, led by a smaller, less talented Donny Marshall, was, with a few exceptions, frustratingly ineffective for three quarters against a swarming Mac defence.
By the beginning of the fourth quarter, the crowd was chanting "we want Finch, we want Finch"...............they got their wish, but probably not the way they would have preferred. After Donny was carted off the field, Finch came in, and immediately seemed to bring some poise to Western's offence with strong-armed, pin-point passing that resulted in a TD less than a minute later.
Will this debut turn out to be the beginning of the Will Finch era for Western football ?
Based on what I saw of both QB's playing against Canada's # 1 university football power on Saturday, I'd bet on it.

As much as I fully agree with all the points made in the Free Press article, one other factor was crucial in the Mustang's loss..................turning the ball over three times on failed 3rd down yardage attempts.
One of those was well within field goal range.............(there goes an almost sure 3 points).
The other two would have put Queens deep in their own end had they punted, giving the Mustangs much better defensive field position.
There's an old adage in football : "you takes what the other team gives ya" - that's something coach Marshall (who I have the greatest respect for, by the way), chose to ignore in Sat's game, in favour of his 'gunslinger' offensive approach - except that against a very well coached Queens swarming defence, playing on natural turf, the odds are stacked against you making those critical yards.
And that's exactly what happened.

Last week's game against a much improved U of T, showed me several positives :

1) crisp blocking on the offensive line
2) crisp & effective tackling on defence
3) Donny Marshall seemingly fully recovered from last season's injury and playing well
4) a better than expected running game
5) a better than expected corps of receivers

Bodes well for the Queens game.

Too bad they have to play on the OUA's only grass field, and guess what ? Kingston got 18mm of rain on Friday.
