How could you ignore the fact that she smelled like ribs and brisket when she got in the car??? That aside, this dinner experience at the boss' house sounds surreal. I'm sure at least one of those restaurants you two dined at was White-owned. She didn't have a problem eating "white folkz food" then? what a character. The way she was attracted to your commentary on this blog is unconventional, but I don't think that could've really tipped you off that she was off skelter. My husband and I met on twitter, so I guess anything can happen. This story should encourage everyone to have the new person they're dating tested by their friends before bringing them to work functions.

Re: Courtship Connection SF: ‘Law School Has Ruined Her’

Why would anyone want to discuss law school on a date? especially with someone who has been to law school. that would annoy the hell out of me. Practicing at a non-profit for the past 5yrs, it is the CUNY Law graduates who can actually afford to stick around. Every time I pay my student loan, I wish I had gone to CUNY! The fact that CUNY Law is devoting resources to students they have identified as struggling is great. Honestly, more law schools should follow suit.

Re: Troy’s Ending Should Be Our Beginning

Thank you for sharing resources & your friend's struggle. As long as police officers are forced to maintain quotas, and prosecutors are forced to aggressively prosecute irrespective of innocence, how can anyone comfortably speak of prison as "just" place for any punishment? the criminal justice system is set up in such a fashion that accepting a plea is often the quickest way to get out of jail. So to those who insist that every person in jail is a "criminal", I urge you to please take a moment to read up on the injustice that saturates this system from TOP to BOTTOM. Great post Dr. Lewis.

Re: Are Morehouse men allowed to be women?

great post! Two major points come to mind from your piece...

(1) UNION-BUSTING
Nearly all the nations that surpass us in education performance have unionized teachers. In Europe, job protection and union representation is viewed as a right that is unrelated to success-rates in education. I don't believe doing away with unions, or divesting them of their power to protect their members' due process rights is necessary to make strides in education. Union-busting does nothing but facilitate abuse of employees. Getting rid of lemons can be navigated without divesting the good teachers of their right to fair representation & support from their union. Unions exist to keep people in their positions. That is what they do. So for anyone to expect AFT to be doing anything but keeping these teachers employed - whether good or not - exhibits a misunderstanding of basic labor law. AFT needs to stop making that misrepresentation, and hire a representative for the media b/c Ms. Weingarten does her organization more damage than good whenever she speaks. If the goal here is to educate children, we won't reach that end simply by firing bad teachers. As much as I am pro-union, I am certainly not pro-waste tax dollars on inept employees. I don't know what if this is shown in this movie, but I know that generally, administrators who don't know how to fire Lemons often will resort to limiting their access to students through creative means. Damage control so to speak.

(2) INFLATED SUCCESS
A few NYC students are blessed with Kipp School, Harlem Success Academy, etc... However these schools are educating a trivial amount of our children and their success cannot be replicated. So it's difficult to say charter schools are the answer when so few of them are successful, and they educate so few children. I taught in a charter school for one year. I stand behind that particular school's success wholeheartedly. But until charter schools can accept ALL children, and their success can be duplicated, I am hesitant to proclaim it as our messiah. Part of this hesitation also comes from other factors - the fact that charter schools are more likely to hire non-unionized teachers, that there are huge racial disparities in the people being hired, and the fact that the city governments are often not responsible for ensuring that they are properly funded.

Anyway, your post got me really worked up (in a good way - got me thinking) and has reminded me I need to go see this documentary!

Re: 'Waiting for Superman' won't fly with some audiences

I am glad to see an informed critique. Tough love is the type of love that rebukes foolishness without decimating the power & potential of a dreamer's folly. What we dismiss as ridiculous notions must be examined - critiqued, but encouraged for what it might create. Idealists must be celebrated. Thank you for this post. These are the brothers and sisters who become "spooks" sitting by the door, closest to the boardroom, best equipped to inform the rest of their people of how to deal with oppressors from within their system. don't be so quick to conclude that one is not unified in action simply because their "actions" don't mirror yours. But you've addressed that in this piece. Anyway, good post. Thankfully, devoted alum such as Professor Lewis are pointing out where Morehouse is falling short.

"The mission of Morehouse College is to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. A private historically black liberal arts college for men, Morehouse realizes this mission by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students. In addition, the College assumes special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people..."

How do you "develop men" if you don't teach these 17 & 18yr old boys how to survive in TODAY'S brutal world? According to the US Marine Corps, instilling discipline in soldiers results in their "ability to do the right thing even when no one is watching" - however we know that in the Marines, this is accomplished through the use of PAIN. From my understanding, Morehouse college does not seek to instill pain on any one of its students. As such, the disciplined mind spoken of in the College's mission is not of the variety that comes from oppression, hazing and pain, like the military does.

No one can lead if they don't develop strong character and knowledge of self. Knowledge of self and character cannot be developed in an environment where self-expression, sexual identity, perception of self, social mental health, social responsibility (need I continue??) are all repressed, trivialized and relegated to 'off campus' activity. These are teenage boys blossoming into men. The current and future students of Morehouse College need their institution to step it up a notch. Lest Morehouse become the scholastic fodder we've come to expect from present day HBCU's. At the end of the day, there is a need for all HBCUs. That need simply demands that they abide by their mission statements, their mission to act as historian for Black people, and cultivator/curator for Black civics and culture.

you are promoting the demise of great HBCUs such as Morehouse, by suggesting that they further distance themselves from the needs of their people in the interest of a romanticized idealism of what it means to be Black. Please stop - our institutions deserve more, and our students are suffering.

Re: Dear Old Morehouse

Beautifully written. You're right - the needs of black boys as they blossom into men, is fluid. As times change, so do the needs of the young men going to Morehouse. Morehouse College should reaffirm its commitment to young black men by building a bridge between idealism and real needs

Re: Alienate Your Female Customers?
