Some on top of cars, some blocking the street. The wind was wild last night in Elmwood and our Halloween decorations flew all around the neighborhood (found one a block away!), planter boxes knocked off the porch, etc. Hot and windy out there.

Re: Shop Talk: The Cutting Edge; Compass Real Estate; Kid Dynamo

Any insight as to what happened with Hatch on College? I know it's technically across onto the Oakland side of the border, but their sign just notes a heavy heart about closing. Assuming it's also rent-related, but I'm bummed to lose it. Same with the sweets shop, which is apparently being turned into a pet-products store? :(

Re: Women Of The C-Suite: “Know what you’re not good at” With Udemy SVP Cara Brennan Allamano & Akemi Sue Fisher

Great interview - Cara is a boss.

Re: Kim's Kitchen Sink: Qualifying Done

Thank you and thank you and that is a very apt analogy :)

Re: BIG News from OrgOrg & Eden! - OrgOrg

Hi! I've always assumed that my daughter will someday be a raging hormone monster because...well, karma. A friend told me that post-weaning, she gets *more* cuddles, since her kid isn't distracted by nursing, and that gave me a little hope :)

In terms of how weaning works, my understanding (based mostly on anecdata from friends and partly from our pediatrician) is that you can either lead it yourself, or follow baby's lead. Leading it yourself means purposefully cutting out nursing sessions in order to work towards no more nursing. Letting baby lead means just doing whatever and not forcing nursing when they don't want it. Either way is fine, just a matter of what your preference is.

In response to your specific questions...
*Do you just...stop?* I've been told that the gentlest way for your body is to drop one feeding per week (if you're leading the weaning process), that's why I did that with pumping. If you're not particularly hormone-sensitive, or your supply is lower/you're not getting full or engorged and leaking, you might be able to just go cold turkey, but I don't know. I opted for the slower, gentler route because I know I'm sensitive to hormone fluctuations and I wanted to avoid hot flashes (when Margie consolidated her afternoon bottle+evening nursing into one, I had awful hot flashes and mood swings). Otherwise, I'm following her lead IRT weaning from nursing - when I'm around here, she can nurse whenever she wants. Except overnight; we're trying to wean her down from 2-3x/night to one (going ok so far)

*How long does it take before the milk is gone and you don't leak anymore?* I have some friends of older kids who say it took a few months for there to be no milk at all (like, upon squeezing, nothing came out anymore). Personally, I haven't been leaky in months, but there's always milk when I squeeze, so who knows?

*How do you distract babies from boobs? Will the kid keep trying to eat them even when there's no milk, or do they eventually forget about it?* Apparently they eventually lose interest in the boobs when they're not nursing...but this can take years? I know lots of 3 year olds who still stick their hands in mama's shirt and want to, like, play with them, even if they're not nursing. So they're not trying to nurse when they know there's no milk, but it takes a while before they forget about the boobs altogether? Sometimes they may comfort nurse even if they're not getting milk, but I've heard both that you can guide them towards a toy to chew on (ie if they're comfort nursing for teething) and/or use a special phrase (ie no more milk) to redirect attention away from boobs

I'm sure my parents-of-older-kids friends will chime in with their experiences!

Re: Kim's Kitchen Sink: 1,367 Words About Pumping and Weaning

Totally.
