Raymond Chandler is reputed to have told would be authors that they have a million words of crap to get out of their system. And in both cases there's a lot of truth there -- if only because it allows you to keep going despite your technical limitations and inability to get the words or the pen to do what you want, and eventually find yourself, well, competent. And some of the words and pictures you turn out on the way can be pretty good too.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. My dad passed away two years ago, and while the grief isn't crushing me every day anymore, it does blindside me every now and then, and I find myself bursting into tears at a stray thought, or the way a character in a movie phrases something. But most days it is better, and I can miss him and think about him without being overwhelmed by it, and actually enjoy the memories. You will get there too, I promise.

There's a haunting episode of the sci-fi comedy TV series "Red Dwarf", where the main characters travel in time and accidentally prevent Oswald's assassination attempt.

It shows the rest of JFK's presidency being marred by scandal and impeachment, and how that played out on a global scale where a weak US couldn't stand up to the USSR. Finally, the main characters recruit an older, sadder JFK to help put the timeline back to where it should have been. The man himself ends up being the second shooter on the grassy knoll, killing his alternate self and preserving his legacy. Afterwards, he just fades away into history.

Had one of these attack me in Noe Valley last year - someone who witnessed it said that the bird had been swooping on anyone who walked past for hours. I doubt it's the same bird, probably just a behavior that these kinds of birds exhibit.
