I've also had luck with an If This Then That recipe (ifttt.com) that will post Instagram pix as native TwitPic photos, which means the images show up inline in the Twitter feed, rather than as links off to Instagram.

Re: Your stories can all now be slideshows

Does this still work? Yes, I recall the "Five Easy Pieces" scene. It's a great one. It's on YouTube and if I'd thought about it, I'd have included it with this post. The difference: I got what I wanted. Jack didn't. :-)

Re: Did Murrow utter the ‘nation of sheep’ quote?

Thanks for your comment. I think you're referring to French philosopher Bertrand de Jouvenel. I haven't checked to see if he actually said it. But I don't think Murrow borrowed it. I don't think Murrow said it at all — borrowed or otherwise — based on what I'm hearing. I think it's just wrongly being attributed to him. But as I said, I'd love to hear evidence to the contrary.

Re: http://my2secondshelflife.tumblr.com/post/2132556918

I don't think Murrow actually said this. http://wp.me/pemu3-oC

Re: Starting to pay for the newspaper again

Thanks. I appreciate the good wishes. That, too, is one of the reasons I'm interested in doing this. I have worked in a start-up before and really loved it. This is another start-up, but inside a Fortune 500 company.

Re: A Twain approach to social media separation

Hey, Lisbeth, thanks for the comment; glad others feel the same. I hope you got to see the animated version on Steve Giegerich's blog. That's the one that tracks month-to-month, and you should see a lot of fluctuation in jobs gained and lost. I just stumbled into Seesmic. I tried TweetDeck, returned to Twhirl and finally decided to branch out again and just happened to pick Seesmic. I really like it, but I'm not sure what I'm missing with TweetDeck.

Game changer? Hmmm. I doubt it. The game's just starting... :)

Re: Is Social Media a Form of Advertising?

Thought-provoking post, Scott. Seems like PR firms and marketing departments are evolving, much as newsrooms are. Remember when a lot of news organizations based their online operations in the IT or marketing departments...because they didn't know where else to put them? I think social media defies categorization.

It certainly has a marketing or advertising function, and that's why it seems to be part of the marketing operations of businesses. But it ought to just be considered conversation. And companies have as much part in the conversation -- with their customers, partners, clients -- as individuals. A social media strategy, it seems to me, serves as marketing, customer service, help, information dissemination, community building....

Re: Anti-gay story comments inspire playwright

I think I did in the updates at the end. I mentioned earlier that we didn't have the original
comment string, so we couldn't verify what she said. The original story
expired and took the comments (which are not archived) with them. The
playwrights subsequently sent us the original comments (which are linked
above). They acknowledged that they did take Shelley's comments out of
context, which I was able to determine because, indeed, I have reading
comprehension skills.

Re: Anti-gay story comments inspire playwright

Thank you, Sam. I agree with everything else you said. As for Star Trek...well, I agree that it's been complicated by the new one. That movie was fantastic. Maybe we have to start a category for "old" Star Trek and "new" Star Trek?

Fun post. Thanks.

Re: 6 reasons we’re lazy about story comments

I'm not sure what point you are making by posting anonymously, but I
appreciate the comment. If your point is that these points of view have no
place in civil discourse, I agree. The commenting guidelines on my
newsroom's site forbid personal attacks and incivility. But the only
solution to the problem is for readers and editors to watch them and
moderate them. My point was that we haven't been willing to put the
resources against that kind of close supervision.
I should say, too, that we often use the word "anonymous" when we mean
"pseudonymous." I'm guilty of it in this column. Most sites allow users to
use pseudonyms, which, as a practical matter, means they are anonymous. And
as I've said before, if anyone has a way to assure on a large scale that
people use their real names, I'm all ears. I haven't seen it yet.

Re: Musings on the start of the college hunt

Thanks, Marijean. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Here's why I don't agree: Because there are lots of comments from
readers rebutting those who objected to the photograph. In fact, if
you parse the comments on the blog item carefully, it seems to me
there's a broader number of people supporting the photo than not.

That blog topic brought in people who weren't regulars on STLtoday,
people who had to stand up and say something. At least, that's how it
looks to me, based on my experience watching the site.

And I frequently see people rebutting those who are less tolerant.
That gives me hope.

Re: Black Man Kissing White Woman on Cover of St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Go!
