It was great to meet your puppy that day. Honestly that was one of two times I've used Foursquare to physically meet up with someone. Another time I was in Boston and we tracked down @JeffCutler by following his checkins until we finally caught up. Ended up being a great afternoon and evening hanging out with him.

For me the benefit of Foursquare has been finding and "meeting" more people interested in social media in the local area. Services like Twitter let you set your location, but it's not a focus for most users of the service so there's little incentive to update your location all the time. Because Foursquare lets you check in at physical venues, it's easier to see when people are in your local area and see who checked in. They used to show you who had checked into a venue, but sadly seem to have removed that feature.

I agree the novelty is wearing off. The question is, will enough venues jump on the bandwagon to create more incentives to check-in when visiting? Starbucks is one of the few companies I saw do it right. They actually let each store know who was mayor of that store and posted it at the registers so the mayor could get their drink.

My guess is that specific location-based services like Foursquare will be come obsolete or they'll be merged into established social media/networking services like Yelp, Facebook, etc. So location-based info will become a part of what you share, but it's just a value add to a service you already use for other things. Automatic checkin when you're near a venue will make it easier for those less concerned about privacy, but I don't believe that alone will be enough to make a service that's just about location interesting enough to sustain in the long run.

Thanks!
-k

Re: Weekend Giveaway: A Droid X from Rebtel

I use Rebtel and would love to win a Droid X.

Thanks!

Re: Facebook’s Stupid Adventure

Wayne-

I'm glad you decided to write the article. I've been heads-down on a number of projects and lost track of what the latest "Facebook privacy" concern was -- these issues seem to be a recurring theme. Agreed that it all comes down to trust. Facebook hasn't made an effort to build that trust. They may have the momentum right now, but if history shows us anything, loyalty is a difficult thing. The fact that Facebook has helped so many connect also gives those same people a platform for letting everyone know where they're going when a more trustworthy alternative comes along.

Thanks,
-k

Re: What I want in a Social CRM (for me)

Thanks Shannon. It's definitely important for me to see a complete history across platforms. Recent messages help with a quick context for what people are currently doing, but I often find myself digging back in time -- and people tend to switch platforms. I've had people start by sending a LinkedIn message, switch to email, then send a message via Twitter. If some of those parts of the conversation are missing, I don't always have the right context.

Offline I think is important for core contact information and may some recent notes, but not for all the historical data. -k

Re: What I want in a Social CRM (for me)

Thanks Jim, I have an account but haven't looked at it for a while. I've tried some of the mobile apps for sharing contact info, but haven't found any that's easy enough to not dominate the time when we should be conversing. If we reach that point, I could be converted. Right now, I'd rather engage with the person I'm talking to than interrupt the flow of conversation. You can pass over a business card without missing a word.
-k

Re: The Business Card Is Dead

Brent-

Thanks for sharing your observations. I didn't make it to Social Media Club NH, but I've been to many others events around NH. As an tech early adopter, I have to admit I still prefer the business card. I keep a very active address book (over 2000 entries.) Most people don't share their full contact information on the social sites and sometimes an email or call is needed -- just try explaining anything complex in 140 chars on Twitter.

I have nothing against people who have decided to give up business cards, but in my experience they are still very much in the minority. I'll continue to give out my business cards to those that still want them.

Thanks!

-k

Re: Enter the Zappos Sharing Happiness $3,000 Shopping Spree Giveaway Contest

the web makes my life better by keeping me in contact with more people than I would ever be able to touch without it. My favorite way to spread happiness is by randomly reaching out to friends, even if we haven't seen each other in 15+ years. It always makes me happy when old friends take the time to tweet/comment/message/etc me -- I try to share that happiness as much as I can.

Re: About Your Team

The PodCamp NH Twitter account is at http://twitter.com/pcnh
Team member IDs are in their bios above.
No Facebook page/event for this round. I've seen you continue growing your business -- and the great response to all of your hard work. I can only imagine how difficult it has been trying to balance developing good relationships with discouraging more aggressive approaches to interning.

I appreciate your honest and candid approach on how you work. I think it's great insight for people who are looking to "be your intern" or at least develop a relationship with you. It's always worth asking, but I read it as:
it should be clear from all the great things *they are already doing* that *you* should be working with *them*.

Asking is one thing -- showing through action is entirely different.

Kudos for taking such an open approach.
