I think this message is getting through. It's been the theme of the year in my circles. An upcoming Code for Change event that I'm helping organize withy NYU, One Economy, NPower, and Blue Ridge Foundation is centered on the sourcing meaningful challenges and matching them up with civic hackers who want to do something that matters.

I used to think digital divide was between people with SMS only phones and everyone else. While that does still exist, I learned that digital divide is mostly between people who have access to a large screen and keyboard while connected to the Internet and people who only have only a small screen and no keyboard, i.e., a smart phone. I know homeless people with smart phones. Smart phones (and 3G/4G tablets) are great until you need to fill out an online form or type a large amount of text to send electronically. And yes, I think this is a silver lining. It shows we are closing the divide.

Let's expand the scope of this a bit and not make it all about apps. Infographics, dataviz, and analysis are perfectly good outcomes from a hackathon about data. Can you elaborate on the nature of the data? Are we talking about an open data catalog? When will the sources be published?

CivicCommons is also a vital node in the Brigade web. "What's working where" is something we need to know and we rely on CivicCommons as the preeminent catalog of civic tech. We're busy cataloging apps and connecting apps to the people who can deploy and sustain them. CivicCommons helps us do that.

I feel personally responsible that they aren't coming to Virginia. They came to Norfolk last year and I couldn't go to the show because I had a conflict. I'm eyeing up that 9:30 Club show, though!
