The context in which I encounter it usually as shorthand to convey that there are more than two parents and more than one household involved in the raising of the children.

Re: Graeme Williamson Architects creates Twin House for blended family in London

In the US, it's a term usually used for a family that has children from previous relationships/marriages, like the Brady Bunch.

Re: Stepped volumes create panoramic terraces for Villa 95 by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos

The arrangement and amount of furniture on that terrace is really something. The building itself looks like a child's drawing of a space bunker rendered life-sized, plopped down in a bucolic setting. The interior feels familiar and cozy. Maybe the pattern on the drapes is doing a lot of heavy lifting for me, but it's giving Brady Bunch house, and I'm inspired to make curtains for my own rumpus room in a similar print. A++ would Airbnb

Re: Glass walls immerse inhabitants of Chilean home in surrounding forest

When I was a kid, some family friends had a cabin at a nearby lake that had a very similar circulation scheme, but with ladders instead of staircases, to access the bunk spaces. At the time, I considered it the height of interior design – a cubby that only my sister and I were meant to access by ladder felt like being in our own little treehouse.

A handful of years ago, just before the pandemic, our two families met up at their cabin again. I will say that the bunk cubbies lost their charm when it was time to access them in my 30s after a day on the lake and a night of drinks around the fire.

Re: Studio Bua creates "elemental look" for black cabin overlooking Icelandic fjord

The window with blue curtains and sheers is in the guest portion.

Re: Malý Chmel divides Czech home across seven concrete floors

This is a home, not a public outdoor space. There's something about it, though, which I can't quite put my finger on, that I wish was different. The interior wall render, maybe? A light color is a fine choice, but I wish it was perhaps lime wash or plaster. Maybe I wish for a couple of skylights in the kitchen? Like I said, I can't put my finger on it, but the interior isn't hitting for me.

Re: KLG Architects uses thick walls for coastal "sanctuary" in South Africa

Perfect house

Re: Emergentes Architectures Sàrl creates trapezoidal beach house on Chilean coast

The decision to totally close the facade that faces one neighbor while completely glazing the facade that currently faces two empty lots and will eventually face another neighbor is odd.

Like, yes, the western facade technically "faces" the sea, but the plot is far enough inland (and among other houses) that they may as well have said they glazed it to capture afternoon sun.

Re: Airy Group and Andrea McLean open Vancouver beach house with folding facade

I wish the built-in in the living room was made of the same walnut as the kitchen cabinetry to warm up that wall.

Re: VATRAA uses reclaimed bricks for London house extension

The number of shots of the four people sitting around the table feels a bit voyeuristic (although I think some of them are repeated).

Re: Donaldson + Partners creates arched house "for the twenty-first century"

I had the same thought about skateboarding, though I don't partake myself. I've been really fascinated by this project since I saw it here a few days ago, and I'm so jealous that you were on site! This particular site is not actually very far from a commercial strip, despite the photos making it look remote (the photog is standing on the commercial strip to take the photo with the planned neighborhoods in the background), plus there are about twice as many parking spaces as there are units, suggesting car ownership among tenants, so I'm willing to concede that there's a plan to get folks to work, whether public or individual.

The other thing I know (from a friend of mine who works as a counselor for this program) is that the aim is for folks to be placed according to their transportation access. This doesn't always work out because of timing, filing, etc, but the goal is that they won't displace folks from resources, even if that means they end up not placing them.

Re: Mary Arnold-Forster Architects extends Applecross Schoolhouse in Scotland

If only the resources were always available for extensions to be completed with the material of the original build!

Re: Zuzana & Nicholas transforms Brisbane cottage into own home and studio

The living room feels like a waiting room to the office of a professional who commands a very high hourly rate.
