That could actually replace my Nokia N95 and allow me to watch the podcasts I tend to watch on the ipod touch too... I am very surprised.

Re: More gaff than giff: The consumer-run network falters

Ben, I completely agree with you. One network having an issue NEVER excuses poor customer service or problems with either other networks or MVNOs. I note that GiffGaff did tweet an apology a few hours ago, but, as with O2 when it happened with them, not enough information and NO WHERE NEAR quick enough, should have tweeted that during the problem, even if you don't know what it is.

I'm starting to think that ALL networks / services should have a status page on their website to show what is working and what isn't, it would make things easier (and in theory stop so many calls to find out whats wrong !!)

Re: More gaff than giff: The consumer-run network falters

Ben, Dan ... 11th May O2 was down for HOURS (I think it was the construction site problems caused loss of power somewhere taking pretty much the entire network out). With absolutely NO comment at all from o2 (as usual), check my tweets on that day around 9pm, I remember seeing loads of tweets from o2 customers at the time.

I should probably note that O2 seem to only do business hours on twitter, which isn't very helpful.

As for GiffGaff, I completely agree with Dan's comments, in my opinion its not so much that they had an outage, its the same as with O2, they didn't tell anyone what was going on.

It was extremely nice of GiffGaff to send me that microsim cutter from the twitter competition when I was having O2 idiot issues with the iphone 3g -> iphone 4 upgrade the other week, however, prizes and being nice don't generally solve customer service issues.

Personally, I think I'll wait and see how GiffGaff sort things out before deciding if I still want to move to them, these problems have given me a bit of a pause, thats all.

Re: What is WOM?

10 years ? Also the UI for a lot of the applications looks "unfinished" and doesn't integrate with the main UI of the device at all. However, it is certainly an improvement on what has been a horrible experience for years.

Re: Becoming Mayor of the North Pole: It’s all in the API

I looked into the "distance" algorithms etc quite some time ago for Buddycloud ideas and also for some other crazy ideas I had to do with nearby calculations. An accurate distance using spherical globe stuff is expensive, but a rough "distance" shouldn't be too expensive to do on every checkin attempt.

Re: Becoming Mayor of the North Pole: It’s all in the API

They could really just check the last checkin location and the current checkin location (then calculate the distance between them - ok thats an expensive calculation), and if the difference in time is less than the time it would take to get to the "current" checkin location in reality then don't allow the checkin.

That would be slightly more accurate than just limiting the time between checkins which could also be done.

Re: Power over WiFi: 'Physics is Physics' or 'Dare to Dream'?

If I remember rightly, part of the point of the Nokia article was the mention that they were NOT using specifically WIFI signals, but generically radio signals (thus increasing the possibility a tiny bit). However, still not going to be getting all that much from it .. from what I see. I don't realistically ever see this as a general means of charging a device, however even if it can provide a tiny amount of power that would be better than nothing. In some ways I suppose you could look at it as recycling energy (so not wasting so much of it ??) Just a thought.

Re: Charger gets power from WiFi [please be true] [updated: man says it's not]

old news etc.. but http://www.fastcompany.com/... I'm sure it'll take a long long time before anything become efficient enough to actually charge a device, but even if it can get a tiny amount of power, its better than nothing.

Re: Screencast: Setting Up ejabberd

Yup, excellent work, nice pace... no issues I can think of so far.

Re: Antifeatures: big mistake that location app developers make

Robert, any chance of you checking out how we at BuddyCloud do it ?

Would be interesting to get your view.

www.buddycloud.com

Re: Nokia N900 Maemo demonstration video

To be honest I have windows machines but I didn't have any speakers attached to them, and didn't want to wait 10 minutes for my laptop to reboot from linux to vista and demand to do updates.

Although if you look about pretty much all the press relating to the N900 seems to be saying that it is Nokia's attempt to lure customers away from the iphone. I'm not sure how much I agree with that and how much I think it is just a fairly forward thinking product because to be honest even though Nokia has the majority of the smartphone market at present, personally, I think the devices are beginning to feel quite dated. Although this video still makes the UI look sluggish compared to an iphone (in places).

However, it'll still be interesting.

Re: Nokia N900 Maemo demonstration video

Thanks Ewan, less grumpy now :)

I stand by my first point though, putting a video that can't be watched by an iphone on a website isn't really going to get anyone to move from an iphone to a maemo device.

Cheers

Re: On the face of it, Maemo looks fuuuuuuuuuuking nice

On another note, I thought I read somewhere recently that maemo was going to move to Qt instead of GTK+ ?

Re: On the face of it, Maemo looks fuuuuuuuuuuking nice

Good marketing ... how am I supposed to be lured away from an iphone if I can't even watch the video on their website ? Infact I also don't seem to be able to watch it on my laptop (linux) which does have the flash 10 plugin in firefox3.5.

Ok, so I'm a bit bleeding edge and not necessarily the intended audience, but that made me even more grumpy, I'll have to check it out on the mac when I get home tonight.

Re: [Insert another 'SpinVox bashing' post here]

Definately still a supporter, still thinking how I can fit SV into my secret application idea.
