digesting the various media i've accumulated over the last few days (photos, sound clips, texts), importing, processing, editing, exporting and uploading to my blog/facebook/flickr, to share the experiences with my friends/family/coworkers/lovers past, present, and future.

fun, worthwhile, time-consuming. mostly fun.

i can has blog: cute, spiders like it, but man does not live by spider alone. or maybe it's just too cute and self-referential. "i think i'm just not in a self-referential phase right now," he said, contradicting himself.

3. I never know whether to order vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate shake. Usually I go for chocolate. Couldn't decide this time and was with two people so decided to get one of each. Turns out they all sucked. Never order a shake at Whataburger.

yeah sorry about that, i'm still working out how to best use qik. it's a live stream so when i stop filming, there's a large buffer that it stiill needs to upload. if i get disconnected before it's all uploaded then it cuts off. balls to that.

I think I fixed the missing not (maybe).

I'm oversimplifying a bit when I say that business is zero-sum. I meant it in the sense that when you have a direct competitor, it's either you or them. But if one or the other can pivot a bit and find their own market niche, then perhaps the situation wouldn't be zero-sum anymore.

Good points, and questions.

Defining success is key, as you say. Declaring your intention allows you to work towards it.

My definition of success USED to be to make a million dollars by the time I was 25, and buy my mom a house.

What's my definition of success now? Very interesting. It's harder to pin down than I might have expected.

It's something like, having the maximum possible impact making the world *better*. Which of course begs the question of what I define as better, and which is the part that's hard to pin down. Being better is a personal thing. For me it includes people on a micro scale (less physical and emotional suffering, more liberation, more joy, more empathy) and the world on a macro scale (less war, more tolerance, less pollution, more bio-diversity, etc etc).

Obviously I need to refine and simplify this viewpoint a bit. :)

I would say that risk taking is certainly a factor, but it's somewhat tangential to my main point.

"If you go for it and try to, say, build a startup from scratch the chances of failure are much greater but so are the rewards."

I guess what I'm trying to express is that if you build the startup with the goal of LEARNING and improving, not success, then YOU can't be a failure. The startup may be a failure, but you will have learned something and hence achieved your goal.

That being said, some lessons are painful to learn and have negative consequences, like being totally broke. Hence the desire to go for incremental improvements.
