Well - I 'liked' your response just now, not sure if that counts to the original total.

You are completely correct about dubstep being less fun to dance to. I haven't tried dancing to dubstep since approx 2009 (at a dance festival which also had plenty of rave/techno/wrongcore, maybe 2/3 F/M split) and in the end we just gave up. IN TRAINERS. I am OLD and my KNEES HURT. It was easier to dance to Shitmat at 210bpm.

I was raised on a steady diet of the cartoon version ('Hero' Turtles? Even I knew that was Not Right) so when I see the dudes in suits as per CPH/TB vid above, their three-dimensional impact is still strong! The films were big here too, but kids my age were too young to see these violent reptiles eating pizza and playing the drums. I assume their presence in the clip is due to the pizza connection, though I vaguely remember one episode of the cartoon where April O'Neill accidentally brings them Chinese takeaway instead (the horror)! I wonder what would have happened if she'd brought them a Taco Bell nose-bag?

Don't underestimate the batshittery that goes on in the world of publishing! I don't know about the specifics of Rihanna or Dr Luke but digging deep into the underbelly of writing credits, pseudonyms and 'change-a-word, get-a-third' reveals a lot of backhanders and skullduggery (basically the only fun bit of my old job). Which everyone was kind of used to in the mid-90s (the Spice Girls' royalty splits are a joy to behold!) before dudes were able to look this shit up on the internet and complain about it.

It's also a strange metaphor to use considering most non-swimming-obsessives wouldn't really know or care what a great swimmer turning into lap 16 out of 20 looks like, whereas most people can easily imagine e.g. a great long distance runner's face as the bell rings for the final lap (or even their face a few laps beforehand if that's closer to describing the situation). Why not use that instead? I would certainly use obscure swimming metaphors in my writing because I am a massive swim nerd, but this dude clearly isn't a massive swim nerd otherwise he would have got the detail right.

ARGH this sentence bugs me so much - 20 lengths is 1000m in an Olympic-sized pool (or 500m in a 25m pool), and there is no 1000m or 500m event in competitive swimming! I am the only person in the world that is annoyed by this! Certainly Michael Phelps never competes in any event longer than 8 laps (or 16 in a shorter pool). It's even worse if you take 'lap' to mean 'one length there and one length back' - then the numbers are halved again. Basically if you're going to use sporting metaphors then MAKE SURE YOU GET THEM RIGHT.

What I was getting at with my original question was the difference between the styles of music - US summer jams seem to be much more about driving around with the top down and yr elbows hanging over the side (Snoop/Dre, Quik/Kurupt, Beach Boys) whereas European summer jams are more sangria-on-the-dancefloor novelty bangers with a dance routine. The crossover to me seems to be the Sean Paul/Nelly/Lumidee dancehall end of things where it's definitely summer but it's NIGHT TIME and it's hot and sweaty down in someone's basement - all this seemed to peak around 2003/2004. Europe never seemed to get the hang of sweatiness or driving about, but we're way better at holiday romances and making arses of ourselves to Whigfield. But then Macarena was a way bigger hit in the US than the UK...

Sports packages/trailers - if these are on major terrestrial or satellite channels they'll have a blanket licensing deal with the major record labels so they can basically play whatever they like whenever they like (hence BBC using Radiohead because Parlophone said 'yeah whatevs' without asking them. Ad companies have to license tracks individually.

In a 1994 interview Courtney said she was more pissed off about losing her gold dress during a bout of stage diving in Chicago than she was about being groped & returning to the stage naked, because it was mostly girls in the crowd who were grabbing her. "I jumped in because I don't care...It's like clawing, biting, kissing, poking. C'mon, kill me. Kill me. Love me. Fuck you." But she's previously been sexually assaulted whilst stage diving - 1992, in the Underworld in Camden - and I don't think she was particularly happy about that.

In the same interview she says a fair bit about 'the madwoman' trope, her image and how she felt way more masculine/aggressive than she was 'allowed' to be. However it's a pain in the arse typing out stuff from a book (this one) so I can't quote it all.
