It's true. I think many people are simply intimidated by silent films because they're different than what they're used to. Also, there's the "old factor" - when you have films like Birth of A Nation that are almost 100 years old you tend to think they're outdated and therefore aren't good. It's sad, really. I wish more people would give them a chance.

Definitely check out City Lights. Also, if you're a Chaplin fan, try some of Harold Lloyd's movies. He's another favourite silent comedian of mine.

That's kind of how I feel about it. The billboard forces people to notice it, whether they like the message or not. This is an age-old tactic and is used by tons of companies/organisations, especially churches. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Richard Dawkins (mostly cause I feel he's too closed-minded and judgemental, kind of like what Shawna said above), nor do I feel everyone in the world should throw aside all belief in a higher power, but I do think evolution and Charles Darwin should be celebrated. It's all about awareness, like you said.

It's true - I don't think it's necessarily effective. I think it's more of a statement. A way of expressing that there are alternate viewpoints that expand beyond the Evangelical Christian worldview that's so overbearing in this part of the US. The use of the word "Praise" isn't the best choice of words at first glance, but I think it's more of a play on words than anything more significant. The billboard is bound to offend regardless of the wording, which I don't feel is a bad thing.

Yeah, I get shit for not liking babies too. I think people assume that just because I'm female I will want to start gushing babytalk as soon as I see one. No thanks. Now, with dogs it's a completely different story.. :)

I'll be perfectly honest: me failing German (mostly due to the way this particular professor teaches) is 99% certain.

My possibility of getting Russian accepted via petition is around 50%, since I have this semester, and all next year to work with Arts & Sciences to get it accepted.

If the Petitions Committee declines, there are appeals processes that can go all the way up to the Dean himself. I know if I can talk to someone face-to-face about it, that I can convince them to accept them. My worry is that something could go wrong and I would end up having to go to school an extra two years JUST to take language. The chances of that are slim, since one can petition transcript exemptions if one needs to graduate and can't due to a missing credit. But I'm a pessimist, and I will still worry myself sick no matter what I choose.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I haven't decided what to do yet, but I'm taking everything everyone says to heart.

Foreign languages are a passion for me, and something I despise at the same time. You're totally right about that. I was good at Russian, but didn't care. I adored Arabic, but didn't care. I was amazingly-good at German, but didn't care enough to keep it up. I have this fail mentality with foreign languages, I guess because I have a photographic memory that's a total crutch for me in every other subject, but it ends up hurting me when it comes to learning a language.

You're absolutely right. I would love to think that I too could luck up one day and get hired by a school or company that appreciates their employees' privacy enough to not freak out if they were to find my Twitter account, but I can't bank on that. I'm still thinking of usernames, so the change is coming.
