Have any of you ever juggled or tried? You start with 1 ball, then 2 then make the leap to 3. From there, the sky is the limit..

However a juggler juggling 3 physical objects is juggling 4+ objects, because in addition to the 3 physical objects, the juggler also has to juggle the audiences attention, and their expectations… and then there is a separate object in addition to all the others that the juggler figuratively has to jungle behind his back with slight of hand… that object is a question and an answer that is always to be avoided…

Audience: “Juggle four! Juggle four!”
Juggler: “...”

There’s a secret though…the audience thinks they want to see the juggler juggle 4 balls… they don’t. This is the biggest key to learning how to juggle:

**The audience does not want to see you juggle an arbitrary number of balls. They only and ever want to see you juggle one more than you can juggle.

So when we want to be entertained, sometimes “enough” = “more”
—

But, this is where the analogy starts to fall apart. (Sorry, I’m not as good at this as Tim Urban and his team, but I hope this was at least moderately entertaining and I hope you will read further, because I think there is something exciting to learn and try and it doesn’t have to do with juggling more objects than we can)

An audience doesn’t really have any responsibilities other than to pay the circus character at admissions, but in this case Tim’s handed us a baton in the relay race before collapsing and drinking electrolytes (i.e. raising a child and being a family…I know - bad analogies all around)

And we’re asking him to hand us a printed version of the baton.

Ball One: I’m only about ⅓ of the way through the book, and I already love it and I’m finding that I will need to read it again. Why? Because I actually tried to start using it. I’m up to near the end of the Social Justice Fundamentalist explanation and examples and I have enough of a framework to start juggling one ball - telling likeminded friends what I like about the book but describing some of the terms and relationships and why I think they are useful. And they are adding it to their reading lists.

Ball Two: After I’ve finished the book, I’d like to be able to use this framework to discuss with friends and tease meaning out of current events and their coverage. Most importantly to rid ourselves of low rung thinking that is hurting us on “the left” and de-golemize our thinking and clearly see where we are doing it and where we are not. The most confusing thing is the mixture of higher and low rung thinking in the same conversation.

Ball Three: use this to talk with people who have significantly different perspectives. Disagree better.

—-
So this juggling performance is different because I’m hoping some in the audience might be inspired enough by the clown pants and stilts and all the trappings of the jugglers to actually try doing some of it ourselves… and maybe it can evolve from solo to group juggling.

Have any of you joined or created reading groups??? How did it go? How has this framwlework helped you to entertain and decrapify political discourse in your own lives?

Re: Why GNSS-independent time sync is crucial for critical national services

The math doesn’t make sense in paragraph 3. So I'm going to post a near-coherent list of things to google. Please take a look if any of these are new or un-read-about. 6 (or 7) types of AD(H)D, specifically the Inattentive type. Dr. Daniel Amen popularized those with his SPECT scans and completely biological approach to udnerstanding and treating it. Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) - when you google, prefer the medical articles that will come up with the abstracts. the body of the article may not be available direclty on the web without payment but you may be able to fidn them elsewhere. RDS lost popularity but it connects some genetic dots from fewer dopameine receptors in the brain to ADD/ADHD, depression, dyslexia, compulsive gambling, turrets, etc, etc. IF any of these things occur inyour family then you may be the odd one out becuase you are the one with ADD, and the others got differnt expressions of the same genes. ADD life coaching. (different from therapy. focused on achieving X,Y and Z) YMMV and all that. Good Luck and never lose nor fan the flame of curiosity.

Re: Alaska from a Cruise Ship

Awesomeness

Re: Dial Oops for Area Codes

Nice article! Another aspect of assigning area codes they way they did, was that the numbers with the lowest sum of digits went to the highest population or most important cities at the time. This minimized the number of pulses when calling the largest number of people. So New York was huge, and it got 212. Washington DC was important so it got 202. Dialing your congressman took less time. Also calling someone in a more densely populated area versus a less densely populated area caused lower dialing time on average.

Re: Lou Reed Helps Sony Have a 'Perfect Day' for the PlayStation 4

Dee is right:
Brian Hastert: http://www.brianhastert.com...
Dave Klasko: https://www.youtube.com/wat... (< See him on the right side. There are more soft places to sit than at Inversion where you'll find mostly tables and quiet studying.

My americano and maté latte was nice last night as was my yogurt parfait. Myself and three friends sat and played at a table where the cooler used to be where I would walk literally across the street from where I used to live to get an Arizona iced tea (pre- high fructose corn syrup), and then walk next door to the laundry mat to play a game of Ms. Pacman and *dominate*.

Katherine, you do well to make comparisons to the other coffee destinations inside the loop as it gives us a picture of the coffee landscape. As somone who lived in and around Montrose for about 10 years I'll offer the following. (I moved to Austin 4 years ago but Houston still feels like home. :-) ):

The Black Hole replaces Cafe Artiste which closed down in May 2008 almost three years ago:

2008 May: Cafe Artiste (RIP) left W. Main and Mandell (http://swamplot.com/dude-wh... Back when smoking was still allowed in restaurants, the place would fill up with smoke, but after that was no longer allowed except on the patio, it was one of my favorite places to go.

Things in common:

- It was a place where you could go to not only study but also to socialize. That place *ate* sound. you could be studying at a table, and people on the couches talking really wouldn't disturb me.

- More soft furniture. black Hole has an area next to the door that is separate from the tables where you can go to lounge. Artiste had more space, but this place works just fine.

- It is in a neighborhood. Antidote, Inversion, Catalina, Dirk's, and even the old Diedrich's are on main streets. Artiste was and the Black Hole is back in a neighborhood away from some of the noise. (Also have a look at Petrol Station earlier in the day - it gets a bit louder at night.)

As for inversion (can't remember when they opened but it was after that house-to-be-scrapped-turned-art-project was built. At night you can still see its image screened on the window when it gets dark enough to be backlit.), they grew a bit more when Diedrich's closed:

2006 Oct: The old Diedrich's Coffee (RIP: http://houstonist.com/2006/... on Hazard and Westheimer, before The Upper Hand got the upper hand and overflowed from next door, was the hangout for studiers and others before Inversion filled more of that niche (complete with patio, though nothing really replaced that patio during nice weather.)

OK, I'm being long winded. But the point is that there is definitely room for the Black Hole.

Re: Arcade Fire Still Can't Shake Houston

I'm from Houston originally and moved to Austin. Well..sashimi profitable, because that has lower glycemic index.

The Fundraising Survival Guide looks like a good read though I didn't read every word. I hope tarsnap's trajectory accelerates quickly enough that an investor is never necessary. Risk is about probability of loss, and the value of that loss. Unless we are talking about a personal machine, network or lab, that value is monetary, or at least physical(data) rather than sentimental. As such, what exactly is the risk of using tarsnap over some other alternative? What are you loosing? data? who can read it?

I argue that the risk is no greater in using tarsnap than it is using jungle box from a technical perspective. Colin is only one person, who has released some software for public beta *just this month*. Unless I am mistaken, tarsnap is only running on one box. So sure, a missle takes out Colin's server and we loose our data before its out of beta.

Why not give it a try! Might as well compare it and see what you think... If you and others like it, then it may be allowed to grow and develop. If it grows enough it may be big enough to have the kind of userbase where we can make valid comparisons between tarsnap and other alternatives based on usage. I for one, would love to see that.

Re: Tarsnap beta testers wanted

I'm really looking forward to this service.
