I wish I could react as positively as some of my fellow Steepsterites, but I'm afraid there's nothing much here to elicit such a reaction. Steepster Select will end—after a few weeks—until you again have time for it, something which will likely not happen. The fact is that in these fast-paced times, once something is dropped, people tend to move on to other (and who knows, possibly better?) things instead of looking back.

Steepster will be maintained with basic housekeeping so it's not overrun with "weeds." In other words, it's plateaued. Basically, if you have any awesome ideas for improving this already wonderful site, don't bother, just sit on them.

A web service, like software, cannot survive on maintenance updates and critical bug fixes alone. Its users like to see evolution over time. I think you do a disservice to your community by choosing this course of action. It feels as if, given your druthers, you'd simply walk away, but you feel an obligation to the community to what, do the bare minimum to ensure this place continues to exist? That the many reviews and ratings and profiles don't just up 'n' disappear?

"If you don't like it, go away" is a common reaction. Except the whole point is that I love this place and see so much potential in it. I'm bummed that my many ideas for improvement will likely fall on deaf ears at this point. Another common reaction is, "It's a free site, don't complain." Except I've been complaining about it being a free site! Were some effort made to make the site profitable, perhaps I wouldn't today be worried that it's going to disappear altogether.

I think it's okay that you've decided not to axe the site, but it feels like you've condemned it to a slower, more agonising death. What would be even better is if some enterprising developers could take it off your hands and not only provide for it and keep it going, but actually take it to the next level. Maybe ask Kevin Rose if there's any interest. The Digg founder is a tea enthusiast and investor.

I may not be happy with the current state of affairs, but that doesn't take anything away from the experience I've had at Steepster since your early days. I may not be happy about the decisions being made, but that doesn't lessen the pride I've felt, seeing how far you brought the site. Whatever the future holds, I remain grateful for everything Steepster has become.

Way to go, Sukhjit! I made a similar non-New Year's resolution, myself, and will use your post for motivation. It's great to have company on these things. I also have a January deadline; in my case, it's Macworld.

Y'know, I really like Facebook's "like" feature. Vox has something similar where you can just click [this is good] and submit it as your comment. I used to think such things were silly, but I've really come to appreciate them. They say hey, I read your post and liked/appreciated/got something from it, but don't really have anything worthwhile to say in response.

If you liked the texture/flavour of the dog, Sukhjit, you might want to try some of the tofu/soy dogs on your next Veggie Thursday. Brand does matter here, so check with your social network before buying (I haven't had them in years or I'd share my opinion). You should be able to find them in just about any supermarket in San Fancisco.

Gah, this is what I get for relying on Twitter for sukhjit.me post notifications. I missed this! Problem rectified by subscribing to the feed. =]

This was one of my favourites! Pua's adorable and that lizard was *gorgeous*. Much prettier than the lizards in Phoenix, Orlando, or Delhi. Blue feet, how fun! I have issues with creepy crawlies and all things buzzy and sting-y, but I love lizards and frogs, go figure. =)

Mmm… दाल (dal). The magic word. I pretty much love anything having anything to do with it. I love the idea of cooking capsules and have been intrigued since I first heard/read your mention of it. I kept forgetting to look it up, though, so thanks for this introduction! I'm eagerly anticipating CC's arrival on the iPhone/iPod touch, which is being planned for the future, according to their FAQ. Good stuff.

Before Disqus, I either didn't comment on blog entries or, when I did, had to meticulously keep track of the web page and keep an eye out for any changes. Commenting on blog entries is, without some way of subscribing to comments, largely a spew-n-run deal, which I really dislike. This is less true now that so many blogs give you the option of subscribing to a post/comment thread. The fantastic thing about Disqus, though, is that it pulls your comments and replies in from all the blogs that support it so that you don't lose track of a conversation. For blog authors it's pretty great, too, because you can pull in feedback from all kinds of sources, like trackbacks, Seesmic, Twitter, and even Facebook.

(I've nothing to do with them even though I sound like an advert, it's just that I just fleshed out my profile and added Disqus integration myself so its features are fresh in my mind. Hope it helps.)

Woo! Glad to hear you'll have some company and aren't all alone. I'll sleep better now. =) Since you've got the day (or at least the morning) tomorrow, you oughtn't leave Philly without trying an authentic cheesesteak, if you're a meat eater. And if you like root beer, there's little that trumps Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer. Walk around downtown Philly, if you get a chance. Like Boston, there are learning aids everywhere that basically let you enjoy your own, free walking tour. (If you've got an iPhone, you can also download the free HearPlanet application, which is kinda neat.)

It's fab that after the initial kerfufflery this is turning into a little adventure, after all. Enjoy it, safe trip home, and I hope to meet you one day. =)

That all depends on your usage of RSS. I keep trying new readers and always return to "the one": NetNewsWire. Its interface and workflow suit me best, but there's also the fact that if I export my OPML from NNW and import it into another application, that application inevitably crashes. I haven't tried any other than can handle that amount of data, stays incredibly fast, *and* that I continue to find aesthetically pleasing.
