I think we'll get past the other issues pretty easily, although that's certainly debatable. It seems to me what Glass does in most contexts is make public behavior MORE public. Certainly, if someone uses Glass to expose something you're doing in private, that's wrong. But what if they happen to capture something you're doing in public? Something like walking down a sidewalk, ordering a coffee at Starbucks or cheering on your favorite baseball team at the ball park? If your behavior is recorded and later exposed is that an invasion of your privacy? I don't think so. It's simply promoting/exposing something that's already public, for good or bad.

So maybe it all comes back to etiquette? I don't know, but it annoys me when people argue about losing their "privacy" in public. Get over it already.

Re: Community Manager & Strategist Training

Hi Sam - For the most part, the concepts in the CM course are relevant for both internal and external CMs. In the CS course, there's an entire module on Internal CM and the other sections provide a nice context to think about internal challenges. We don't have plans to build a course specifically on internal CM at this time. I hope this helps.

Jim

Re: Bitter American Clone | the Bottle Farm

Posts like this make me want to pull out my carboys and start brewing again. My FB "friends" swelled to the point that I was following acquaintances (and their content) and found I was missing updates from friends/family that really mattered to me. We agree that there is a lot of opportunity for folks with a communications background to migrate into community management. The coming talent gap I see has more to do with the senior level strategist, which every company will eventually want to have in house, but is in short supply. Existing CMs will grow into that roll, but I don't expect them to do it quickly enough to fill the gap that's already underway. We'll see. :-)

Jim

Re: Danger: Community/Social Strategist Shortage Ahead

Thanks for the comment David! Running them consumes the iphone battery so quickly it makes the value they provide hard to justify. Keeping your iphone/android charged took center stage this year at SXSW, with many considering Mophie the winner of the annual buzz war. Fedex had people roaming the halls of ACC as mobile charging stations. Really? I deleted Highlight, Sonar, Ban.jo a couple days in because I couldn't figured out how to keep them from chewing through my battery. Not ready for prime time.
- Couldn't agree more on the fragmentation of customer engagement. Brands need to invest in people/agencies that can help them stay on top of it all and create content/facilitate conversations on disparate platforms.
- Burnout is growing. Implementing/growing/evolving a brand's social presence is hard work and the people on the front lines are tired. I'm in the midst of writing a post on this - be on the lookout. :-)

Jim Storer
@jimstorer

Re: Community Management Education (and Certs) a Sound Investment –Yet Experience Trumps All

Hi Nathalie - I helped develop the community manager certificate program with WOMMA & ComBlu and can say we agree on nearly all your points. We heard from customers and friends that they wanted an option to bring their teams up to speed on what community management was all about. They were scaling from 1-2 CMs to 10-20 CMs relatively quickly and wanted an cost-effective solution.

In building the first module, we solicited input from current CMs to hear what they thought was important to explore with students in the course. We did our best to create a balance of perspectives, including both thought leaders and practitioners in the different segments. These real world, peer-based experiences are a very important part of what we've developed. This is very much a peer-based educational experience.

By no means is this course finished. We'll learn from the first run, adapt the content based on feedback and changes in the market and evolve the course. We talk with community managers every day (some in TheCR Network, some not) and roll that into our perspective. This comment thread is a great example of that in action. We're listening.
Thanks - Jim

Re: My Own Adventure in Wayfaring: Saying Farewell to Radian6

Congrats and good luck on the next chapter! Just last night I trimmed a bunch of folks from my Facebook profile to streamline my experience there a little. I probably need to do a little more pruning. I'm trying to get better about managing my lists on Twitter so I see the people that really matter to me (personally and professionally) on a regular basis. I haven't even begun to tap into the power of G+... it's just too much at the moment.

I guess my advice is to take it all in stride. Jump in when you can and interact with conversations and people that matter to you at that moment. Don't get bogged down trying to be everything to everyone. Share what you can, when you can and don't apologize.

The balancing act you bring up is an important one. I try to remember it's just as (or more) important to nurture your offline relationships as the online ones. Jay Baer wrote an important article on this topic the other day.
http://www.convinceandconve...

Stay cool!

Jim | @jimstorer
