I think you touch on a problem that all social networks face, how do we show interesting content to that user.

Oddly enough some people do care what their friend, colleague or favorite rapper just bought. Leave it up to FB's edgerank to filter out the less interesting stuff to you.

It will be up to the companies to integrate these features in an interesting way ( funny/ intriguing copy maybe ) to ensure their content moves beyond the profile and into peoples news feeds.

Reducing the noise in a social network is very important, the problem each users definition of noise is very different.

I think the Facebook Messaging service ( once the current security issues are dealt with ) is something that marketers need to pay attention to.

The main difference as I see it is that a new layer of trust will be added into our messaging. Emails or messages sent to me by people whom I am not friends with or companies that I don't like will be kept out of initial view ( like my gmail spam box on crack ).

As a plus, for companies who have been able to develop trust and receive a tumbs up opt in, this means more opportunities to reach a person. As the Blue Sky Factory blog writes,

"when you send a message to someone, it finds the best way to reach them, such as SMS, IM, regular email, or chat. As a result, if you are able to gain permission to send someone a Facebook message, you’ve effectively gained permission to reach them via any channel they want to use."

This means marketers who have not invested effort and time into building a facebook fan page, could be in trouble.

I agree it's a big change, one that will be most felt by people/ companies interested in communicating with the millennial generation, a group who has been using FB as a primary source of communicating with friends for years now.

You got it right there sapereaud, slow as dial up baby! Regulating seems to
have this evil connotation to some people, yet the absents of regulation in
effect regulates against one group and for another.

The last thing we need is for a tiered internet, one that limits innovation
and encourages the same old way of doing things. Where big money wins, and
the little guy loses.

The biggest innovations come out of left field, not from the incumbents, and
network shaping or priority would hurt that innovation immensely.

ps. We in North America should be thanking our lucky stars that the Chinese
government is such a fan of censorship and network control. Talk about
hurting their development and innovation. A neutral internet (like the
neutral power grid and neutral road ways that our countries have been built
on) is one of the biggest assets we have.

Good point Joe, though i think you miss the point.

This is a gross exaggeration of what could happen, but the reality of
current regulations is that a tiered internet is a real possibility.

That's not good for anyone, except maybe Comcast and some entertainment
executives.

@irak794 - I hear you. It moves an article, makes people talk, sells papers. It also contributes to slower adoption of these new tools due to fear and misinformation.

@Susanna Kelly - Thank you so much for taking the time to share your comments. I appreciate it. I understand the basics of your article, my problem is that the title doesn't look like it was put on the right article.

More students are failing the U of Waterloo grammar tests and some professors say more people are turning in inappropriate writing styles (emoticons and lolz included)

Where exactly does the twitter and texting come in? Is there a study or a quote you were referencing? Was this your editorial department shortening a Headline?

I guess I'm still left a little confused.
