I've uninstalled the Hangouts app, but that didn't seem to change anything. I've retracted location permissions to a bunch of apps, and still no noticeable change. With the lower video quality due to Jesse's camera, I assumed the video all came from one source.

To be frank, I only made it through part of the video. Even if you pay to remove yourself, those police records still exists on plenty of sites (the one where this site just took the pics/names from in the first place).

2) Random pics from escort ads with no real full name or even the first name. Chances are they don't even include the real name. No point in removing yourself, because who's going to find it in a web search in the first place? Sure, maybe it crops up in an TinEye image search, but just like 1), that pic was already on the Internet elsewhere where it was associated with the sex worker biz.

3) 'Revenge' profiles, where someone posted a racy pic and real name of an ex out of spite, or worse, who is to stop the site owners from seeding their profiles with random pics they found on the Internet? In this case, the profile is so out of context and lacks credibility (especially if there's no mug shot of police report to back it up), who would believe it when they found it?

So really, there's no rational reason anyone would want to pay these guys.

In reality, there's probably a number of people under 3) that will freak out at the idea of their name being associated with the nature of the site. They can't calmly understand that it's not as bad as it looks and you shouldn't give into the crooks running it. Other folks may see someone else's name on the site and not get that it's likely an extortion scam.

Still, I'd just like to think people are smarter than this. The lack of Twitter feed updates makes me hope that this thing isn't getting enough tracking to merit continuously maintaining it.

Re: The story of every for-profit social web service ever.

It's not they they wrote something other than what they meant. It's that other people told them 'This is what I think you mean, so I'm going to tell everyone that my interpretation must be true'. There's a difference between poorly presenting your intentions and presenting other intentions altogether.

Now as it turns out, they did revise what they said in another blog post. But I don't even think they're changing their mind here either. They're simply delaying a new TOS change until they can better explain what they want to do in a blog post, as opposed to a mere legalese change like the last time around.

Instagram/Facebook are still guilty of colossally fucking up this announcement and not understanding the fickle nature of the average Internet user. I just don't think this changes their plans for monetizing the service significantly. Just how they intend to communicate and roll those changes out.

Re: The story of every for-profit social web service ever.

So what's the lesson here? Have fun while it lasts? Charge users from the start, and settle for a smaller, but more stable (i.e. profitable) community?

Or maybe just make deleting your account and data a little harder, so that people have time to cool off a little and buying you some time to explain what you actually meant with your new EULA.

Re: Poll: Obama Maintains 5-Point Lead In Ohio, Race Tightens In Virginia, Florida

Jeep Production Isn’t Moving to China, Chrysler Chief Says
http://thecaucus.blogs.nyti...

Re: Is There a Landmine Hidden in Amazon’s Glacier?

Get rid of my robots?
