Very pretty, but not friendly.

Images suddenly filling the whole page and then shrinking to the size of a postage stamp; one-post-per-page doesn't make browsing easy, although in this age of RSS readers I suppose that that is not important; and the first time I saw a video post it obscured the arrow bar, which basically meant I was stuck. Shame, because the *content* was really interesting.

Really, though, I could tell it was a non-starter because there was a little "?" in the bottom right corner to explain how to use the site. Any application where the user feels they need to explain how to use it up front or you will not get it, has failed already.

My take would be "shows great promise; needs more work".

Re: Told or Known

No.

Should people have the freedom to post what they think without their relatives or current (/future!) employers finding out that they are gay / atheist / left-wing / whatever? It's just as easy to hit the bookmarklet than the reblog button; arguably easier, since that's what you do with non-tumblr sites. That makes the feature an also-ran, at best.

In the same way, it is considerably more convenient (for me at least) to "follow" someone by adding them to my RSS reader than to click on the "follow" button.

When I see "you have n followers" or "n people reblogged your post" in the Tumblr dashboard, I know that the numbers don't mean much.

Re: Things I tripped over on my way to the internet.

The problem is, you'd need at least two to have any fun at all. (Beethoven's 5th? Handel's Messiah?) Taken over, say, pop/rock tracks of the last 20 years, it's subjective and therefore meaningless -- there can't be a "perfect song length" because it depends on the preferences of the listener.

Re: http://roamin.tumblr.com/post/33634641

I did skip-read the article and got a little annoyed that it assumed every reader would think of "music" as "pop music" (or however you want to describe it). I don't listen to classical much myself, but it just seemed dumb. I do like the longer rock pieces.

Also, I'm old enough to remember when musicians were forced to limit the length of their songs to under 3 minutes or they just wouldn't be played on the radio.

Mathematics in music is a fascinating subject. I just wish it had been addressed more intelligently by Wired.

Re: New feature: Tag filtering

Nice. Everyone had one of these. Then some idiot added a lion and everyone else had to get one too -- after all, they didn't want to feel left out. Someone finally went too far and added a giraffe, though, and that's why drive-in movies were invented.

Good job too, with all those dizzy lions wandering around, causing a health hazard.

Re: my socks don't fit — Poll : What do you think about the Tumblr radar?

Actually, this makes sense to me. I don't like the radar because it's cliquey.

The old radar just posted stuff at random, or posted everything. That was cool. (Although, people are now posting more NSFW stuff, which is presumably why that folded.)

But what's this new radar? Who chooses what it posts and what it doesn't? I have no idea. It very much looks as if the Tumblr staff do. Well, it's their site, they can do what they like with it. But I'm passionately uninterested in what they think *we* should do with their product.

(Logically the radar should post the posts with the most reblogs. Maybe it does. But they don't say.)
