And your misunderstanding is a HUGE part of the problem. Pedestrians get killed all the time even when they are in crosswalks. It is because people in cars expect everyone else to leap out of their way any place they travel. Parking lots, pediatric practices, crosswalks, stop signs. Pedestrians are considered an ‘ inconvenience ‘

The unintended consequence of synchronized traffic lights to keep vehicles moving is increased vehicle speeds. Increased vehicle speeds is what kills people when they get hit by cars. Real traffic safety measures will result in cars being slowed down. If the town really wants to be a place for all, not just people in cars, there has to be a check in speeds and the expectation of drivers for unimpeded travel throughout town.

What I find interesting is how quickly the UCI responded on the DISC injury (better safe than sorry) whilst there has really been NO reaction yet in regards to motos.

Maybe actually make drivers face some consequences? Either the laws are too weak, or the attitude of prosecutors are to be lenient on drivers who have stricken down pedestrians. In a second, a person driving a car can ruin (or end) a persons life. And they will be charged with a misdemeanor or a minor driving infraction. Keep in mind that many pedestrians are out there walking because they cannot afford to drive, and they certainly cannot afford the medical bills and 6 months of recovery when they get knocked down. These are life altering events for the victims, and the motorist face little (if any) responsibility to what they wrought.

If students cannot walk freely on a college campus, where cars do not really belong anyway, where can they roam safely?

The reason your article fails in satire is it bleeds your apparent feelings as opposed to trying to make light of the topic.
And, sadly what comes out stings because it really echoes many peoples opinions on pedestrians.
My challenge to you is to stay out of the car for a week. Walk everywhere. Don't even step into the numerous buses. Just walk everywhere.

It would have been a more useful article if the writer had taken the names of the public speakers, and presented a more balanced account of what was presented to the commissioners. I, for one, also spoke, both endorsing parts of the resolution , and offering my bike clubs help in educating cyclists. The way this article reads, you would think that cycling is a huge safety issues in rural orange county. It really isn't Im, and many of my fellow cyclists ride tens of thousands of miles annually in this area. We follow the rules of the road, and we ride safely and sensibly. To change the laws because some of the folks speaking witnessed incidents of poor or dangerous riding is like suggesting closing down the roads to cars as well because of a handful of drivers running stop signs.

As long as they limit the number of cars allowed in Sausalito to 1,000 as well, sounds like a fair exchange. Imagine how the town would change if there were ONLY 1,000 cars? Many streets could be closed up most of the day for use only by children and pedestrians. Bring it on! ;-)

Google maps tells me it is a 13 minute walk from the pit to Hillel.
8 minutes to Linda's
The more well heeled will need 16 minutes to hike over to the Crunkleton
I am certain you kids can do it, and we will give you a sticker, and try to arrange for snacks outside for the trip back to campus.
Regarding the parking issue. Serious question now: Do students on campus drive their cars on trips less than a mile? I would bet the hike to the lot alone would take just as long as the trip in the car.

Assuming this is one of myriads of April fools jokes on the web today, but if not:
How about just closing the South Road to all but bus and emergency vehicles during the day?
More seriously, how about designing with the radical concept that cars are the problem, and as long as you design everything car centric, you will have car / pedestrian issues? Perfect example is the pedestrian diversions made on and around campus to accommodate construction.
You would never see the ridiculous , serpentine detours for auto traffic, but it seems a-OK to make students and faculty walk across streets multiple times, and then dead end popular cross campus pathways for months and even years at a time.

Bridges are a logical approach across multi lane, divide highways, but they are an epic misunderstanding of urban design in this instance

Boy do I want a job at CAS!! It would be a dream job, and I'd have more time to ride my bike. Boss comes in, and asks me if I have completed my tasks.. I would just tell him "I have postponed the completion of my my assignments until next month" That would be SWEET!
