BUT, there are holes it can fall into.
1. I would not want to all of a sudden start seeing ads pop up in the commentary
2. the content might drift towards the inane or worse (just look at the comments on any Youtube video of a Fox news broadcast), while this might be considered entertaining by some, it would seriously damage the value of the commentary to many

What I am hoping to see is that this has a flavor of the Wave ideas folded in over time, so that I would have control over the commentary I see, in fact I would be able to see what pages people I know have commented on, etc.

I'm optimistic

Re: Claiming My Right to a Purpose-Centric Web: SideWiki

I agree with your observation, Dave, that much of the created content will be of little value or even harmful, but I think goolgle will try to use aggressive filtering based on your own social networks and use preferences to remove the content you do not want to see

Re: Unicycling Madman

Ive seen him a couple of times. Being a really small shop it's not so easy. While automating the push isn't so hard, finding the right people to talk to who have the experience in developing the automation has been hard for me. For example I'd love to know more about how I can get the browser tests automated. The second and more practical limitation is that 15k tests may represent more engineering time than I've had total to build out the product. I admire these guys though, they had the vision to build this out, fought for it and now its part of the culture and the are reaping the rewards.

I'd love to hear Timothy Fritz on a Technometria podcast

Re: Using Grep and Find

I must agree here find grep is hardwired into my own wetware as well.
For any one using emacs M-x find-grep and for the dyslexic M-x grep-find
will get the output into a buffer. Deals like that are kept to the smallest
of circles regardless of whether it's a church or General Electric. You, or Phil could have asked
until you were blue in the face and you would have been told that "there's no deal" until the second
after it was announced

Re: Unicycle

Kevin, this is the short ride to St. Josephs. I'm a big Barnett fan and found his first two books some of the best non-fiction I've ever read. A buddy of mine who's been involved at the highest echelons told me that Barnett pretty much had it nailed.

The wall came down along with a bad form of governing in eastern Europe in large part to a more enlightened populace that were trading in audio and video tapes so they could see what was going on in the world. Internet connectivity is essential for development of the non-core.

Your point made that terrorists use technology while denying it to the citizenry is the hallmark of a repressive totalitarian regime. These folks are just the current set of bad guys that just happen not to control a state.

Re: picplace1

yo, i just gotta tell ya I love this stuff

Re: picplace1

this is a second track that I just love, watch the bouncy markers on one of my favorite lunch rides

Re: Train to SF created 29 May 2008 14:05:44 GMT

Shaili, I think I've got the setup of the comments good to go for version 1, your original set of comments is now not accessible from this page because the title has changed. I think that this is an astute observation. This post nicely points out that this type of complexity is new to web heads and twitter was caught in old school "linear" thinking that scale problems were going to be caused by a hockey stick growth and not very early on by geometric growth in traffic by a relatively small user community.

Re: Bigger Monitors Boost Productivity

Real estate is king. I have a dual head 19"ers and a laptop with as many pixels I could get on the model. It's not just pixels either, it's also number of heads. For example I often run apps full screen or a VM in a monitor. I find that allowing a full screen to support and app many time s figures into to productivity as well.
