As the person who took the photo, alas I did not get to leave the city via plane and sat in that traffic overnight for 9.5 hours. Still on my way back to SF.

Dear Wendell, do you know any industrial farmers?

They care, intimately, about every acre of their land, its history and soil composition, and how to maximize yield (profits) while minimizing the need for inputs (expenses). And they care deeply about a sustainable business to pass on to their kids, as the vast majority of these "industrial" farms are still family owned and run.

It's an exciting time for "agtech", as technology is finally catching up with the needs of these farmers: helping them get out of spreadsheets and whiteboards and guesstimates, and giving them the real-time and historic data to make informed choices instead of simply planting whatever new seed their Monsanto sales rep recommends using whatever inputs that same sales rep says to buy.

This change will come quickly in the next year or two. The truly scary problem is water usage, with ridiculous choices like growing lettuce in Arizona. This has little to do with industrial farming.

There are truisms in sentiment, but data is the foundation for a sustainable solution to the problem of feeding 7+ billion people.
