Love the value of the 2nd day shipping and have definitely availed ourselves of the many ebooks available to Prime members.

I didn't know about David C. Cook's ebook list. A quick Google search led me to the site and sign up was relatively simple. Like you, I don't know how many will be a good fit, but at no-cost its a no-lose enterprise. Thanks for the recommendation. While there were many observations jammed into a few paragraphs, sadly they have taken close to a decade of ministry to learn/observe. I am grateful, however, that I have been able to learn this sooner than later in ministry. Otherwise, I think I would end up exhausted, as so many ministers often do!

Re: ‘Not your typical pastor’

Larry,

Thanks for the comment. I surmise that you are correct on a number of counts. What I find interesting is that Mr. Jones would not refer to himself as a Christian and he had no clue that I was a Wesleyan pastor. He did, however, have a very clear image (caricature?) of who/what a pastor is in mind when we met.

Re: The lack of discipleship: An ecclesiological problem

Jesse,

Thanks for sharing a little bit about your own journey and especially your struggles with the pragmatic mindset. One of the great things about the pragmatic and/or functional nature of Wesleyan ecclesiology is that it tends towards being a 'concrete ecclesiology' rather than a 'blueprint ecclesiology,' to borrow Nicholas Healy's terminology.

Re: It’s hard to disciple someone when you have never been discipled

I whole-heartedly agree. Discipleship cannot be forced upon someone. With Jesus the disciples were willing participants. That's one of the thing that I always appreciated about you and mom. You were patient with me as I sorted through my faith. I'm sure it was difficult to watch at times, but it was important for me to own it and want to grow in it. I thank you for that and hope that I can have the same patience with Quinton and Maddie.

The fifteen minute rule came from ATF. It's been enjoyable to sit down and reread Wesley's journals with an eye toward the ecclesial, rather than the soteriological. While there are a number of differences between the two traditions, the one that seemed to cause the greatest concern amongst members of the group was the anti-intitutional bent of the Anabaptists that was evidenced in many of the plenaries and workshops. Wesleyans, by contrast, are more comfortable and amicable to institutional forms of Christianity––some of which is related to the tradition's roots in the Church of England.

Incidentally, this was a concern articulated by the group. Personally, I can see some validity to the critiques of institutionalized Christianity––although, institutions become necessary and inevitable as movements grow.

Hope this helps to clarify. Again, thanks for stopping by.

Re: FaithHacking: The sixty minute disciple

Tim,

I agree wholeheartedly with your final statement –– our ability to grow can be hindered by unhealthy things and can be greatly enhanced by healthy additives. That being said, I would suggest that your illustrations have less to do with efficiency and becoming instant made disciples than with cultivating an environment that allows spiritual formation and growth to happen over the long haul.

Re: FaithHacking: The sixty minute disciple

How so?

Re: Note-taking: A few humble suggestions

I definitely wouldn't put myself in the class of "pen geek" quite yet. That being said, after a few short days, I can see both the appeal of non-disposable pens and how one develops a passionate attachment for their pen of choice.

On a side note, the Heart of Darkness ink shipped with a plastic (disposable?) fountain pen. I'm interested to fill it and give it a shot as an easy-to-carry option for grocery lists and post-it notes.

Re: Roadside Evangelism

I was just messing with you.
