I basically ran a little experiment trying to motivate myself using the power of Facebook.

Well, If you can see this message, that means I achieve...d my goal. Wo0t!!!

Yeah, technically it's after Friday 11:59pm... and it's just a picture of a LOLcat instead of something related to the site I'm working on... and I didn't achieve my other goal for the week...

BUT despite all that, I'm going to go ahead and call this experiment a moderate success. The simple fact of posting something publically made me feel more accountable and gave me some extra motivation to power through when the going got tough. And it did get tough. Integrating with FB Connect pretty much kicked my ass.

Anyway, it feels good to get my "hello world" finally live. Stay tuned for more exciting motivational ramblings, coming to a facebook near you...

Re: Curious Jordy? - Get a grip!

Heh - yeah, I've learned (finally) to never give advice to guys unless 1) they ask for it, or 2) there's just no other way out.

Re: Curious Jordy? - Get a grip!

Thanks Neil!

Re: Curious Jordy? - Get a grip!

Yeah, that meta-awareness is key. Paying attention to the conversation topic and the nature of the conversation itself. I've never really lived by myself so I wouldn't really know about that, though. It's OK, I'm not bitter or anything.

Yeah, I did it.

Re: How to win friends and influence people (by copying your cat)

Hm... in this case the trigger would be the behavior itself - whenever somebody does that thing that you like, you reward them.

A couple thoughts...

Becoming more aware of one's own feelings, especially positive ones, helps with this. I definitely have a hard time with this myself - it's so much easier to recognize when we get frustrated than when we feel good. That's why most people use punishment instead of positive reinforcement.

So my suggestion would be to work on mindfulness and being aware of your internal state. A site like http://www.happyfactor.com could be helpful to get started with this. (If you already do meditation then you're probably more used to checking in with yourself.)

Good luck!

Re: How to win friends and influence people (by copying your cat)

Thanks Tom.

Yeah, spot on about the human training vs dog training. I learned so much from reading "Don't Shoot The Dog" that applies to everything I do, with both pets and people.

I'm only vaguely familiar with NLP, but it sounds similar enough to be worth investigating. Are you familiar with it? Can you recommend a book?

Non Zero looks fantastic - I just ordered it. Thanks for your thoughts.

I particularly like the concept of using technology to facilitate the expansion of social networks around "enlightened" or simple "higher-functioning" individuals.

Makes me think of Clay Shirky's recent article about happiness being contagious: http://www.nytimes.com/2009...

I think that there is a big potential for this kind mindfulness spreading service. I also have experienced the phenomenon of being inspired via Twitter and blogs. Definitely something I'll keep looking out for.

Re: How to win friends and influence people (by copying your cat)

Hey, glad you like it!

That's totally right - the cat's unconditional love is a huge part of why people are more able to show affection to it. Because they're not afraid of rejection.

I think the reason for cat's unconditional love is simply that it is totally dependent on you to survive. Don't bite the hand that feeds you, basically.

It gets more complicated with people, because most friends/lovers/family members typically aren't 100% dependent on us to survive, so they have the option to reject us, if they want to...

People are more complicated than cats, but they have their benefits, too. ;)

Re: jordym.com - How To Be A Failure

The startup may be a failure, but you will have learned something and hence achieved your goal.

That being said, some lessons are painful to learn and have negative consequences, like being totally broke. Hence the desire to go for incremental improvements.

Re: jordym.com - How To Be A Failure

Declaring your intention allows you to work towards it.

My definition of success USED to be to make a million dollars by the time I was 25, and buy my mom a house.

What's my definition of success now? Very interesting. It's harder to pin down than I might have expected.

It's something like, having the maximum possible impact making the world *better*. Which of course begs the question of what I define as better, and which is the part that's hard to pin down. Being better is a personal thing. For me it includes people on a micro scale (less physical and emotional suffering, more liberation, more joy, more empathy) and the world on a macro scale (less war, more tolerance, less pollution, more bio-diversity, etc etc).

Obviously I need to refine and simplify this viewpoint a bit. :)

Re: jordym.com - Flying above the clouds, Mt. I meant it in the sense that when you have a direct competitor, it's either you or them. But if one or the other can pivot a bit and find their own market niche, then perhaps the situation wouldn't be zero-sum anymore.

Re: Positive capability

So much talent. http://www.myspace.com/core...

Re: Positive capability

These guys rock: http://www.myspace.com/theb...

Re: Positive capability

yeah sorry about that, i'm still working out how to best use qik. it's a live stream so when i stop filming, there's a large buffer that it stiill needs to upload. if i get disconnected before it's all uploaded then it cuts off. balls to that.

Re: Positive capability

1.
