Lots of great stuff happening in Boston right now. Another great event this month is RamenCamp, organized by Jason Evanish, Kabir Hemrajani, Josh Bob and Jeff Seibert.

http://ramencamp.com/

Re: Employee Equity: How Much?

Totally agree on the basic framework. But using salary as the basis seems unfair; startup salaries are usually reduced significantly, and sometimes the most senior people make the least. So this method double penalizes them. Instead, you could substitute their "market salary", or you could just take the difference between what you'd expect their total comp to be down the road (i.e. when the company is thriving) and their present comp and use that as the basis for the grant.

Re: Peter Thiel Challenges Entrepreneurs to Think Bigger at MIT Enterprise Forum

Thanks for the coverage, Cheryl. The rising cost of education and the decline in big innovations are important issues deserving of a lot more attention. So it's great to have folks like Peter highlighting them.

The full video is available at http://www.justin.tv/mitef/..., in case anyone missed the link in that last paragraph. The sound quality is poor, unfortunately. But we'll eventually post a high def version. Hopefully the audio will be better in that one.

Finally, a big thanks to Peter and his crew for flying out for this and to Pearl Freier for doing all the legwork.

Re: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Boston Tech Community 2011

Great post, Rob!

Re: Twitter Brings Back The Old School Retweet With The Blackbird Pie Tool!

Hey Ted, if you're interested in old school retweets for #NewTwitter, check out my Chrome/Firefox extension.

http://jonpierce.github.com...

Re: Twitter Brings Back The Old School Retweet With The Blackbird Pie Tool!

Want old school RTs for #NewTwitter? Tim's a good friend, and I love what he has done with the CIC.

I run another space in Cambridge called Betahouse, which some friends and I started over 3 years ago for just these reasons. As a hacker and aspiring entrepreneur, I wanted a place where I could work alongside others like myself. The coworking movement was nascent at the time, and I thought it'd be great to build a coworking space focused on a specific community: tech startups, hackers, designers and other creative folk -- my community. So my cofounder and I pulled together a small group of like-minded friends and Betahouse was born -- the first coworking space in Boston, and, as I sometimes joke with Mike Hirshland, the *original* "frat house for geeks" (of course, being down the street from MIT, I would never *really* make that claim). In fact, Betahouse and Dogpatch share many of the same values and goals. Of course, Betahouse is independently run and doesn't have deep pockets backing it. I guess you could call it the scrappy version. :)

That said, we're about to expand, and one of my goals is to line up sponsorship to help subsidize space for startups and other people doing awesome stuff in the community. It's all about the community, after all. The space is the least interesting thing about it.

If you'd like to learn more about Betahouse, here are some links:

http://blog.jonpierce.com/post/705186605/betaho...
http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2010/06/29/fear-n...
http://bostinnovation.com/2010/07/11/in-betahou...

I'd love to have you stop by next time you're in town. Xconomy's new Boston editor, Greg Huang, asked me yesterday to offer one piece of advice to new entrepreneurs. I said "be fearless". Sometimes it's not about knowing what we should do, it's about mustering the courage to do it... to make that leap... and to keep going in the face of adversity and doubt. Good post.

http://www.xconomy.com/bost...

Re: Top 8 Boston Angels on Twitter

Very cool!
