I've led a sheltered life, in my string of coastal southern California cities.

Re: Just call me Martha Stewart

Nice! What's going on on the other side of the house?

fyi, I clicked on "1 comment on this item" at the bottom of the post in google reader, the link address was http://feedproxy.google.com..., and it took me to a "this advertiser link is no longer available" page.

Re: Finals week inspiration

I don't usually like the guardian comics, but this one left me laughing :)

Re: In Which I Showcase my Royal Dorkiness

haha my biggest piece of advice I usually give you already seem to know.
Measurable, outcome-oriented goals are key - for example 50 internship apps
by Dec (but for me, "process" goals like update every Sunday don't work at
all, I even had a very similar goal once). It can take some thinking to
arrive at the real goal statement - sometimes you have to get both more and
less abstract to identify root causes and intended outcomes, and then come
up with a solid goal that captures everything well. Sometimes things that I
can't formulate as goals get shoved into "operating principles".

After thinking about that, I try to prioritize in terms of level of impact
my action has on the outcome and then level of impact the outcome has on my
life - expected value, basically.

If you want another business book to add to your list, try The Goal, it's
what first got me thinking about my goals in more rigorous terms. Since
then, I've found the enthusiastic use of goals to be very helpful, and I
enjoy thinking about them and making them.

PS, I'm seriously a fan of Disqus's reply-by-email feature.

Re: In Which I Showcase my Royal Dorkiness

learn to make shorter lists? :-)

Seriously, it's a great list, and I make lists like it a lot. I find however that the next step is even more useful; that's the step where I go "OK, what on this list is actually important, and what on this list is actually important NOW?"

Re: InternshipIN my life away

.

Re: InternshipIN my life away

I realized I didn't include the actual link in my comment - here it is:
http://economistsview.typep...

Re: Would you like to supersize that salad?

I made that mistake when *I* was a kid, even.

Re: InternshipIN my life away

As a labour market intermediary, you should read "The economics of labour market intermediation" subtitle "Why hasn't the increased availability of information [ie, the internet] reduced the demand for labor market intermediaries?" Good luck with the project! I've had three technical internships and the interviewing/hiring experience was drastically different for each, and this year in particular really underlined the frustration of offer-timing. I hope you guys can improve the internship world a little bit.

Re: Lenovo begins shipping the S10, accidentally cancels my order!

Back in 2007, I placed an order for a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet. It was due to arrive 3 weeks after I ordered it. Okay, a long delay, but still worth it I thought. On the very last day of the original projection (checking my order page every day in the upcoming week to see if it had even shipped yet) my page suddenly said the order was canceled. I called them up and they told me the same thing - that *I* had voluntarily canceled my order! I asked them to reinstate my order, and they told me that the price I got was a special and they would have to charge me an extra $200.

That was when I logged on to Newegg and ordered my EEE PC which cost a quarter of what the Thinkpad would have, and which arrived a scant three days after I ordered it (and that was the longest wait I've ever had from newegg, too.) I haven't looked back! Customer service still counts. I'm never buying Lenovo again.
