I mean, I guess the point of writing this whole thing was to say "no, I'm really not"? I will be convinced it's successful when those same people show up to things that are not explicitly catering to them. I want to see them learn to be uncomfortable for a change.

I think, like most of us, you will understand how you feel about it when you go to the space. I was verrrrrry skeptical, though tried not to be so publicly because I want to support such things, and I went down once. And then I went again. And now I keep going back.

OMG hi. I went on a multi-store search for a dress just like the one Shirley Manson has on in that video and black go-go boots to match. I found it and wore the ensemble to my sophomore semiformal back in 1996. Somewhere there are pictures.

I was sitting in the park a few weeks back listening to Sonic Youth and trying to explain to guys what it was like to have Kim Gordon to look up to as a young rock'n'roll straight chick in the early 90s. I used to haunt Boston stores looking for X-Girl stuff I could afford. Only ever found one T-shirt...

One of my favorite things about Tumblr (and the Internet!) is finding people whose blogs I read linking back to me. In this case, people whose blogs I love writing about other pieces I love that they found through me. Do THAT with a magazine, Internet-Is-Ruining-The-World crowd.

What I love about that video is that she's singing this incredibly predatory song, giving these incredibly predatory looks in situations where women are usually considered to be exploited, victims, etc. She owns that video, those situations, and turns it all on its head. It's not just art, but FEMINIST art.

yeah, I made that choice and haven't regretted it for a second. but you know, the whole kids thing hurts on many levels--it's not even just that someone's writing off your ability to be loved or to be a parent, but they're devolving every possible expression of love down to having babies, as though if you don't produce a crying tangible expression of love then your life is worthless.

I guess, like Cara, I didn't immediately read it as saying that. It's an image that will definitely be absorbed by a person depending on their prior views of Courtney and Yoko, not to mention women in general. The intent of the artist might have been to insinuate that, but the art can carry messages that aren't entirely chosen by the artist.

I don't really know anything about art critique--what I do know is informed by literary criticism, in which it's kind of taken for granted that the artist doesn't get to explain what they meant.

This is totally the point I made about Twilight that got me yelled at by lots of feminist comics bloggers. (Post here http://blog.newsarama.com/2... )

Drama--movies, books, whatever--is about conflict. If the stories were perfect tales of feminist utopia, nobody would friggin' watch 'em. I loved Twilight, loved Juno, adore Lolita. I didn't care for Knocked Up, but I found the relationship unrealistic not because he wasn't HOT, but because she was this super-achiever and he was a complete slacker. Hell, I read Juno as kind of a reaction to Knocked Up--from the girl's point of view.

Holding women to some unrealistic rules of Proper Feminism--well, it annoys me in real life and it annoys me in cinema, too. I'm a straight girl--I like skirts and heels--I wear makeup. Plenty of people pick at my feminism too, because I can't possibly be proper...and, well, the stuff I reblogged from Melissa today pretty much says it for me. ;)

I don't like Larry Summers, and could name a few people I'd have rather seen in charge of econ policy (:cough: Stiglitz) but now that he's in charge, I enjoy it when he talks sense. ;) So I hope you're right--unlike Rush, I don't want people to fail just because I don't like them.
