Just incredible to see people like you continue to make excuses for the worst GM in the 4 pro sports. Amaro, as usual, acted like a clown and an embarrassment, and you think that since he apologized when he was forced to (because not a single team would take on Howard for a tenth of what the idiot signed him for) that he needs to get a good old pat on the back. Hey Mike, I was at the Taphouse. I'm sorry I missed you. When I got there, there were only two teams that wanted to play so we decided to cancel. I think the combo of the Penn kids being out of town and the weather being 8 degrees kind of kept people away. I appreciate you coming out in the cold to play, and I'm sorry we had to cancel. I didn't realize that the Patriot Act was instituted under Obama. And let me guess: you were all for it when Bush was in office, but now that Obama is in charge, you think the Patriot Act is an affront to the Constitution? I'm against shit like that regardless who is in office. I thought it was a disgrace under Bush and I still think it is one. I think Snowden is a hero, and am glad that Obama has taken such a huge hit on this.

I still think Obama is better than a McCain/Palin ticket, and quite frankly Mitt Romney is one of the worst candidates either political party has ever had run for President. Yeah, I'm not real crazy about Obama, but he's better than Bush and anyone the Republicans have put up against him (damning with faint praise). That said, i will acknowledge that after Bush and Obama I no longer have hope that our Presidents can or will lead effectively. They are puppets for larger interests, and those interests aren't ours.

Minstrel shows were based entirely in racial stereotypes, but there is no sense in condemning the past. However, the notion that "bringing them back" is something that you're defending just blows my mind. Since you seem to be such a fan, though, can you please tell me which of the Ferko's was performing as Zip Coon, the "uppity black" who was portrayed at most minstrel shows, and which one was Jim Crow, the "carefree slave"? Then explain to me why this is an art form that should be brought back.

Yes, I am an Al Jolson fan. He was a terrific performer and by all accounts a tremendous guy. He also didn't normally perform in blackface. The Ferkos could have easily honored him without the homage to the Jazz Singer, but decided to perform in proxy "redface" with huge white smiles, and just in case we didn't get what they were going for (wink wink), added a few wooden cutouts reminiscent of Little Black Sambo (only with a slightly lighter skin color to try to deflect criticism.) The concept of "bringing back those minstrel days" is clueless and insulting. It doesn't need to be brought back, it should not be honored in a parade, and the fact that people are defending it just blows my mind.

Rebecca, the photo above of a wooden depiction of blackface was taken at yesterday's parade. That alone should have caused the Ferko String Band to be disqualified. But on the technicality that they painted their faces in a color other than black (though they painted them in true blackface "style" and did a rendition of the famous blackface film "The Jazz Singer") they were not only allowed to participate but were rewarded by finishing fifth.

I wrote a piece about 5 years ago where I disagreed with your sentiment about the Mummers, Joey. After what I saw yesterday, in particular the Ferko String Band, I want to admit that I was wrong. I hate to curb free speech, and I don't want some corporate bullshit Disney parade either. But the use of blackface is just so mindblowingly stupid and racist that they should have been kicked out of the competition. But not only were they not kicked out, they finished 5th! Which means that it's not only the Ferko String Band that finds this acceptable but also the people judging it, which means that this type of "Minstrelry" is deemed totally acceptable by the community that is the Mummers. The rest of the country kind of got disgusted with blackface over 100 years ago, and yet the Mummers still think it's not only acceptable but worthy of recognition. Mindblowing.
