Really interesting article - difficult area. Given the research was in China we can't assume they held to the traditional biblical view that we humans are the dominant species so there. Why don't we give our fellow creatures some respect? Why is solving a human problem an excuse for overriding another species right to live naturally? Was amazed at the number of primates involved in USA research - don't bear to think what we are doing to them!

As the Feds keep shouting - they have stopped the boats. Our navy is doing the work (in secret) so there is no need for these refugees to be detained any longer. They are predominantly refugees as agreed by the Government - not illegal immigrants. They don't stop in Indonesia as it doesn't recognise their refugee status and they are stateless and can't support themselves.

Don't know when I've read a bigger load of old codswallop? Don't you guys know the planet has a problem - global warming? The science is sound. Coal needs to be kept in the ground so we can use it to make better things (add value ) than just burning it.We need to have zero carbon emission.Coal looks cheap as it doesn't pay for the damage it is causing the planet. Nuclear looks attractive but look at the unspoken costs - what happens if a plant gets damaged or what is the cost of decommissioning one. Reminds me of the brilliant way we rehabilitate old mine sites! What ever happened to geothermal power of which we have an endless supply - don't tell me it's too difficult!!

Baffled. Why bring nuclear power into the discussion? They take forever to build and the cost of decommissioning them and storing the waste outweighs any short term benefits. How does building a nuclear power plant help cutting emissions from the transport sector or the agricultural sector? Dumb, Everybody needs to help except of course the science deniers.

Amazingly stupid decision. Adani gets unlimited free water to wash coal??? - what happens to it after? The Adani family makes more money in payments - $120 million a year than the Qld government $5 million for 5 years. It's then go to try and collect a $2.5 billion debt from a company headquartered in a tax haven. Give me a break.

Why do we need to help SME's? Isn't "en-lighted self interest" supposed to be working here? I bet, if you dig down into the stats about SME's, most are micro businesses trying to earn the owner a living. Most are never going to grow. A simple webpage, email address, simple book keeping software and they are done. Surprisingly a lot of their work comes from old fashioned ideas such as Messanger Ads, word of mouth, etc- not Face book or Instagram.

Excellent article laying out the knowledge already existing. The ideology comes with determining the balance - eg how many do we want to catch? If you're not worried about blow back - they're probably not going to vote for you anyway go hard. What is unconscionable is the rigid "debt?" recovery process which is out sourced to private enterprise.

Just another whinge about politicians - what do we need to do would be a better article. Why is defence spending off limits as we can now defend ourselves (2016 white paper), why would Apple bother about our lower tax rate when it (and others) don't pay any tax anywhere - why not ban any company from having off shore tax arrangements - why do they need them - to boost Bermuda's economy. Why not quarantine some natural gas for domestic use so gas fire power plants become economic again? Anybody else got some new ideas?

Not many positive ideas about how to fix the problem. How about we build a rapid start gas plant at Moonta (lots of gas) and a big power line south. Then get a geothermal plant operating up there. As back up we operate a solar thermal plant in Port Augusta. All proven technologies. Problem solved?

The author doesn't explain how pushing the "goverance" back to the states would work. Would we get 7 new coal fired power stations (all subsidised by the Clean Energy fund) as they use "clean" coal technology. Great just when the rest of the world is learning how to build and use renewable energy. Yes we'll import all the bits and technology just like we do with solar. We are fast adaptors of other people's technology. I sometimes despair. Why can't we be better?

The plebicite was an idea thought up by Abbott - a deeply religious catholic to stall progress and keep his job. As people have pointed out we don't use this instrument to determine other policies. Just get on with the job and pass the legislation in the normal way. It's a serious issue but the plebicite is a distraction. Could be ok if the legislation is automatically law as in a referendum but its more complicated - voting to be counted by federal electorate (not by state - easier and less costly) so the "conservatives" have an excuse to vote No. It's also compulsory - why?
