Hey...

I did see it. Letterman2 is native to 1.5 and uses the new framework for various bits and pieces. Multiple newsletters is on the cards for a latter release as are some cool new idea's and features.

Hi Brian,

You could always add content by ID. But the plan is to use the new framework to allow Letterman to render itself via JDocument hence anything could be included (in theory at least). This could include modules as well as content.

By having a base template that sets up the modules etc the newletter could be 100% autonomous, at least thats the goal. :)

They have done a good job and as X-Ception has pointed out competition is a great thing... its certainly giving me the prod I need :P

I would hope that they continue to develop it even after we have released Letterman 2.0 as I think having choice is also healthy for the Joomla! community as a whole.

I think Brians on the money in regards to terminology.

Every cms uses same terminology for differnt effect, Modules for example exist in many CMS's but are to varingly different degrees different from one to the next.. The result being the punters have no idea what they are looking for.

Hey Brian,

Good post... on subtle and as you mentioned often forgotten nuances.But I would difer by saying...

Open source licenses each serve the philosophical view of their creator[s]. This can differ slightly or dramnatically from license to license. The GPL was created to serve the views of Richard Stallman, just as the BSD, MIT and others served the philosophy of those behind them.

Point being that when you chose a license you should do so with a full understanding of the intent behind it. If you do not support that, then you are doing yourself and the license an injustice by using it.

Likewise when you chose to utilise Open Source software, you are taking on the license that the software uses and thus the philosophical intent of that license.

If you don't like it or don't support it then don't use it.... simple.

PS.... Whilst I would probably never freely chose to use the GPL... I will always defend its intent when I do use it. I personally do not believe recent development in Joomland reflect the intent of the original GPL but the intent of the FSF... they are not one in the same.

Not exactly Amy... its no coincidence that all the GPL 3rd Party libraries in Joomla! 1.0 were replaced by LGPL (or more liberal libraries) in Joomla! 1.5.

What has happened this week in no way reflects the views that were aparent to me 1 1/2 years ago.

An approach I use that is client friendly is to separate "Niceties" from "Necessities" right from the start. I use these two pigeon holes to help ensure that the focus of initial development is getting the client what they need rather than the wish list derived from what they have seen on numerous other sites.

Clients like it as it forces focus, reduces initial costs and provides a way forward once the site is up and running.

Now if I could just get them to use professionals for copy I would be all set.

Obviously I'm familiar with the age old comparisons between Joomla! and other platforms and for the most part I agree with the apples vs pears analogy.

IMO... If people take the time to find the solution that will best suit their requirements and abilities it will be the most useble for them.

If you want an easy to use turnkey blog then I would venture to say that Wordpress is the most usable by virtue of the fact that it is designed to be just that. If on the other hand you want a small business site that has some chance of standing up against corporate competitors then I would venture to say that Joomla! or Drupal would be the best choice and hence the most usable in that instance.

In my own case Joomla! would in 99% of cases be the most usable for me simply due to the fact that I know it inside out.

Short version being... chose the platform that fits you and your needs and regardless of what it is it will be the most usable.

Many people, not just Devs don't understand that license they "chose" to use.. A case that I found quite distressing, only due to the fact that the dev had absolutely no idea was this...

Please correct me, when I'm wrong, but in my eyes GPL is not equal Open Source. The author can release a product under the GPL and make some limitations. For example ******. ****** is freeware, everybody can use it for free. What I do not allow is, to make changes on it and than redistribute it. Therefore it's not Open Source! Of course you are allowed to make changes to it by yourself on your site. "

That post is from the creator and dev of the project. He is without any idea about what the GPL license's intent is much less what it means legally.

For a web server I have everything installed natively rather than using MAMP or XAMPP. Apache is already there in OSx.

You really need to read up. The actual reason of the GPL was to preserve user freedoms, but "Free" of cost was not one of them.
