With the router changes delayed for 3.8 we are working on introducing them into TEXTman (http://joomlatools.com/text... for article. With the added ability to handle auto-matic redirects (in case you change an article alias) and the ability to recognise duplicate content and set proper connonical url's.

The reason we removed it in the article manager in Joomla 1.5 is because it created a reverse and coupled relationship between the article manager and the menu manager.

The change in 3.7 solves it correctly by adding the functionality to the menu manager itself, where it should be. The menu manager knows about the article manager, the article manager shouldn't know about the menu manager.

Bringing 'Add to Menu' back in articles would be a step back in my personal opinion.

Would you guys be interested to create a little 'sync' plugin for the console using the above CLI script ? Would a super nice addition for the CLI.

Hi Dewan, when you uninstall DOCman 1.6 no data is being removed and the database tables are backed up for you just in case.

If you then install DOCman 2 and install the the importer, it will find your data and import it on the fly for you.

Hi Andy, We are looking at a time frame of 4-6 weeks, but no promises made.

In any case we advice to use RC3, which is super solid. The stable contains a few pretty major changes and can be less 'stable' then RC3. If you want to get started now, use RC3 and switch to stable once you feel you are ready for it.

Thanks you are correct. You did indeed mention the word distribution in the correct context. I was unsure reading your post you were completely aware of this difference. The rest of the post led me to assume otherwise. My apologies about that.

I still feel the post is a little bit unclear on the topic of distribution versus internal use. The example you used might confuse people. I feel it would still be good to further clarify the meaning of the word distribution and the difference with internal use per your reply.

Hi Chris, excellent article yet not completely correct.

That is not correct. The GPL does not require you to release your modified version, or any part of it. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.

For example, if a company would build a custom CMS on the Joomla Framework and only used the software internally there isn't any distribution. Modifications by their own employees for internal use would also be allowed and not considered distribution. In this scenario the GPL does not take effect on the custom CMS at all.

This allows companies like Wordpress to build Wordpress.com and Acquia to use Drupal for Drupalgardens. Both GPL and both are running modified versions of Wordpress and Drupal since the modifications are only used internally, and are thus not being distributed they need not be shared publicly.

The only license that does impose code to be made available even if it's not being distributed is the AGPL (Affero GPL), for more info see : https://www.gnu.org/license...

The essence of the GPL is that it does not limit what you can do with the software -- it only imposes requirements on you when you Convey or Propagate the covered work. To quote the GPLv3:

"To “propagate” a work means to do anything with it that, without permission, would make you directly or secondarily liable for infringement under applicable copyright law, except executing it on a computer or modifying a private copy."

So if the only use is with a private copy you are not Propagating or Conveying the work so the conditions that allow you to Convey the work are not relevant.

So in short, by staying GPL, the Joomla Framework does not 'limit' who can use it, and also does not 'force' solutions built on it to be open sourced and contributed to the community. It only requires developers to convey their code under same terms. Nothing more, nothing less.

Quick update : We just released an update to our migrator. You can now use the migrator also on Joomla 1.5 and export directly from Joomla 1.5 to 3.0.

Hi Rafa, that is correct. DOCman 2 fully integrates with the Joomla build in search. In the next version support for smart search will also be added. We no longer have our own search solution. Does that help ?
