Am really pondering this exact thing at the moment and looking at different options ie new job, get out of industry before even started, keep trying/talking about change and banging head up against wall.
The exact two points you mentioned from Mal's presentation were the two I chose to print out and place on my desk :)

Re: Debate-able...

Am so looking forward to hearing this debate. As someone who has just qualified (HD'd my last assignment-yeah) but is older, I learnt heaps of info, but nothing that was truly applicable in our current changing environment. All my learning has been self guided, and has been reinforced by the 23 things program. Attitude also plays a massive role, but can that be added to core criteria? KSC1- a willingness to keep learning!

Re: The YA nerd factor...

Your last sentence really resonated with me - "yes they read - they're just not using your library". Thanks for the post and links.

Re: An Idea that I had...

I just love the ask now online reference. I did my prac at brisbane square where I spent alot of my time learning how to use it and I loved it! Our lib does not provide this service at all, which is such a shame. I really love your idea and a meebo widget could work. I was talking to a ref lib over in the states at 4am a few months ago via the meebo widget and I had a great chat. He told me all about his lib, what he does, some of the meebo stats etc. It could provide all that you have mentioned above, depending on the staff logged on.

So good to know other people have wild ideas racing around their heads in the wee hours of the morning:)

Re: Libraries and professional development...

I can't wait for the NLS4 - just got to complete and then pass that last essay! I am paying for myself to attend the conference, as I have paid for nearly all of the PD I have attended. All of the above reasons are very valid. I did fill in the form attached to the NLS4 and handed it to my employer who said ah, no! Looking forward to continuing this conversation in person:)
