(Or is it?)

Bern Schupback, my stepfather-in-law posted this on facebook and it's worth sharing here:

I don’t know if you are still wondering about this, but I
came across this on Facebook today and it was recent. I thought I would respond before I am an old, retired, useless over-the-hill physician.
The medical literature regarding cavernous malformations is confusing to
the lay person and probably to many physicians. Imaging of these has been a part of my subspecialty and I have seen the teaching regarding them evolve considerably over the years.

A “tumor” means a mass of cells that are no longer under the
body’s control. They are replicating and the tumor is enlarging without being controlled directly by the body. It will only cease growing based on local nutritional effects......it outgrows its blood supply, it enlarges beyond the body’s ability to supply nutrients, etc.

Tumors are further divided as to “benign” and “malignant”. Although there are a few odd conditions where the margins are blurred
(leiomyomatosis, carcinoids, etc.), a benign tumor grows in one location and does not spread to other parts of the body and a malignant tumor can spread to other parts of the body ultimately causing changes in organs that can lead to death.

Although a cavernoma has been historically referred to in
terms that would be associated with tumors (cavernous hemangioma, cavernous angioma, etc.), they are properly considered vascular malformations. A vascular malformation is a non-tumorous abnormality
of blood vessels and there are five types commonly recognized:

1.Aneurysm.....a ballooning out of the artery that has a
relatively high risk of bleeding and causing death and disability because it is part of the high pressure arterial system. I like the “fireman analogy”. This is part of the fire hydrant.

2.Arteriovenous malformation.......a direct connection between arteries and veins that has a relatively high risk of bleeding and causing death and disability because it is part of the high pressure arterial
system. This is part of the hose.

3.Telangiectasis......a tangle of dilated capillaries with
intervening brain tissue that have low likelihood of causing death and
disability because they are in the low pressure, low resistance part of the
circulation (the capillary). This is part of the water dripping off the burning house.

4.Cavernous malformation......a tangle of dilated capillaries
with no intervening brain tissue that have a low likelihood of causing death and disability because they are in the low pressure, low resistance part of the circulation (the capillary). When bleeding occurs, it is usually a slow oozing that is of low volume and stops, but recurs frequently. For that reason, on imaging studies, including your own, there is often evidence of old, new and subacute bleeding. This is part of the water dripping off the house.

5.Developmental venous anomaly......a tangle of disorganized
veins that almost never causes a problem because they are normal low pressure vessels. Rarely, if they are narrowed and pressure elevates, they can cause a problem. They can be found in association with cavernous malformations. They provide my final firehouse analogy: this is part of the sewer system that drains the water.

Cavernous malformations are not tumors, but vascular
malformations. Although they can develop later in life (from radiation therapy), they are most accurately thought of as congenital problems that eventually lead to symptoms from recurrent tiny
amounts of bleeding. In your case, assuming the entire vascular malformation was removed, which there is every indication there was, you should consider yourself cured.

The more time that passes, the greater chance you will be
free of the only consideration at this point, a postoperative complication such as seizures or infection. I know as a very “cerebral” person (excuse the pun), you always seek to understand things to the most profound level and I hope this helps.

Bottom line: Despite the hassles and limitations you have experienced as a result of this, open that bottle of Grass Widow and let us drink a toast to how lucky you are. It could have been so much worse......and we all rejoice that it wasn’t!

Re: Shift-Alt-Nine

wow, we were really having a good time!

Re: the jmast tumblr

Still love this quote.

Re: http://thenormal-detroit.tumblr.com/post/3361281709

There is cork board in room 2108, so we will be able to pinup.

Re: http://thenormal-detroit.tumblr.com/post/3119693957

Um, gold mine.

Re: http://thenormal-detroit.tumblr.com/post/2811611123

I'm going with Krista Thursday night too. Perhaps theirs is a critique or readjustment. I also wonder how we'd reinterpret that model now that we aren't an agrarian society where sustenance had a direct connection to land. What would be the simplest way to achieve economic sustainability? Are they all large scale or are there small scale ways to achieve this?

Re: loved. - white blazes

nice bag

Re: Tumbld Upn - Recycling Corks

any plans for these? i've been thinking about what to do with mine.

Re: the jmast tumblr

Haha- definitely been there

Re: Down With Grad School?

Definitely. It's interesting to just start with some questions about the whole process. How is it that a college degree in any field has the same format- 4 years, classroom study, professor taught, etc? Does it make sense that an English and a Biology degree cost the same? I know that the American University system is considered the best in the world and I buy that, but perhaps there are still big questions yet to be answered. Perhaps this just means it's the place most ripe for change.

The apprenticeship aspect of job training is interesting to think about too.

Re: ?

slightly, but i've managed

Re: Tumbld Upn - The creative process is all predicated on making...

amen

Re: Drop and Rollerblade - Sarah and I finally got our engagement pictures...

really cool

Re: raise the dead - This one goes out to Troy, my only follower, and...

i'm following...

Re: the jmast tumblr

Alvaro, I've been good.
