Plus when I tried to tighten it, the plastic ring around the screw hole broke off, which makes it even less stable. Long and short, the magnet part is super cool and works well, but because the holder isn't secure and bounces around, my phone falls off regularly and is hard to read because it is jiggling. Not recommended, although I don't know if it is better than the others out there.

Re: New Platforms Mean New Opportunities: Welcome to the Video Reblog!

Here's the thing. It doesn't have to be a BAD video just because you are building a video around a text story... just as a reblog on Tumblr doesn't have to be "bad" or "good", but is based upon the time spent, tools used and the skill of the creator.

Using these tools you can create high-quality videos with excellent voice-over, engaging and relevant visual content, and a true beginning, middle and end. Or you can create something that's lame. Like any tool, the power is in the hands of the creator. But with these new tools (and I should have included ShowBox as well), you don't need an army of producers and editors to create high-quality material.

We're rapidly moving to a world where video will be associated with most text stories - look at this latest article about CNN's actions, for example: http://digiday.com/publishe...

Now you can certainly spend a day or two crafting a multi-camera crafted video. But these new tools let you create something compelling and interesting without having to spend all that time and money.

It's similar to the evolution of text - we went from magazines that required editors, paste-up, layout, printers and mailing to blogs - but the early days of blogs required hand-crafted HTML code along with those words . That required some coding knowledge. Fast forward to today where you can create a blog and publish your text-based story in a matter of minutes using Wordpress with no specialized knowledge required.

There are bad writers and good writers. But now it is that much easier for anyone to WRITE, without worrying about how it will be published.

And in the end, there are many folks would rather read than watch. That's fine. But many folks would rather watch than read. These new tools make it that much easier to create a great visual story, along with a great text one.

Oh, and I didn't create a video - but I certainly could. Heck, why don't you give it a try with one of these tools - Showbox, Flylabs, wochit, Wibbitz, and let me know what you think AFTER you give it a go.

Re: The Digiday guide to the year in conferences

This will be a self-serving comment, but I wish you'd also included the Industry Track at Vidcon - the leading online video conference of the year. I'm curating it this year, and we're building a great mix of fireside chats with senior media leaders, round-tables exploring real issues and solutions, hands-on learning and demos of the latest platforms, services and products. I hope to see you in Anaheim July 23-25th so I can show you how amazing (and valuable) it is! http://vidcon.com/

Re: No silver bullets

I've worked with both Perlis and Dvorkin and they are great - and deserve a lot of applause and credit for making the best out of a declining asset. But you are right - I think the most important job in media (although I don't think it exists today) is Chief Audience Officer. Who, in today's modern media organization, is responsible for curating and growing the relationship between brand and fan?

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your "relationship and service strategy". I tried to find solutions to my "issues", but some (nay many) of them were obscure or seemed to be missing. As I wrote the story, I actually found some things I'd previously dissed in the first version, and changed the one I sent in. And as I explore the platform more I expect to find more. (and yes, I used Crackberry to install everything I could!)

the upshot doesn't change. Really nice platform. Needs Gorilla Glass. And I worry that it is too little too late. But for the next year or so, this is a pretty sweet phone!

Re: Why Brands Suck at YouTube

Yeah, I agree with you Rafi, but in the end a metric ton of brand-focused engagement beats a gigabyte of big data every time. You have to do it right though. Brands have to be committed - as do the YouTube talent - to becoming a valued and trusted member of that talent's community. Then you leverage the connection between talent, brand and community to introduce your channel, product, videos. It's an on-going process, but to ignore a collaboration with a channel with, say 3 million subscribers to try to do it alone is a recipe for frustration.

Re: Google in Jeopardy: What If Watson Beat the Search Giant?

Very interesting and thought provoking. And I live in the bay area.

And I agree with you 100%. There was a very well respected guy I met with last year when I was trying to sell Revision3. I told him that I thought Android was a pretty good platform for apps and views (we had just released a killer Android app to watch our shows).

He dismissed Android with a wave, saying that no one used it, Apple had won, and implied that anyone who used or thought Android had a chance wasn't worth the breath to argue with.

Needless to say, he didn't engage further. And I couldn't be happier. If you can't get out of the coastal bias, you don't know how people really use technology. Real people use tech in very different ways than the coastal elites. And Android is winning handily in the hinterland.

jim

Re: Is the Millennial Workforce Linked In?

"Did you know that the average age of a LinkedIN user is 43" - Brian, why is this surprising.
