This article states that you can scan tags when the iPhone is sleeping, but Apple’s docs indicate otherwise...

To avoid unintentional tag reading, the system reads tags in the background only when the user’s iPhone is in use.

Experimenting with this myself (iOS13, iPhone XS, NTAG215) seems to confirm Apple’s docs—no scanning when the phone is asleep. The phone doesn’t have to be unlocked, but it does have to be awake.

This is a very nice infographic, but I would love to see one that gives some insight into the actual data (which, unfortunately, the Archives of Internal Medicine have since made unavailable).

There's a thoughtful breakdown of the data (which was just a survey, not a test) on this page:

You could use the power of an infographic for good! Use it to turn the study on its head! There are some real gems in the data here, like...

* The people in Q5 (most red meat) had the LOWEST cholesterol.
* The people in Q1 (least red meat) - had the HIGHEST cholesterol.
* The people in Q5 exercised the least, and smoked the most.
