I think spec work is great for building a portfolio when you have nothing. It's a win/win situation. If you actually get picked you make some dough, if not you got a good portfolio piece (if you really worked for it). However once you have a more developed portfolio I think whether to take a job on spec or not really depends on the client. Spending all your time on Crowdspring doing job after job with no pay is no way to attempt to earn a living at what you're doing (like I said, a great portfolio builder). I also understand the arguments of how it lowers the value of our craft and I think that argument has some merit.

Absolutely, both to help and to bring along people at my church that would benefit. I would also echo the sentiment that a social media "conference" that uses social media to break traditional boundaries of travel and cost would be excellent. Perhaps a local hosted event in combination with online material would be a great compromise between the two mediums.

Echoing this sentiment. With the possibility that you're going to take that photo, photoshop it til you see fit, and then stick it online somewhere and I'm never going to see you or possibly know about it again creates a bit of an issue. While you might have had a right to take the photo you didn't have the right to do much of anything with it without my consent, so why draw lines? Ask me if it's ok to take my picture. If you're not an ass I'll agree. Is that too much to ask for?

A Tandy 1000 that had the monitor baked in to the machine. Of course it had one (count em!) color, orange (came in green as well). 2 5" floppy drives (you know, the actual floppy kind) to load programs from. I remember the game I loved to play the most as a kid was a bowling game that was nothing more than ASCII art moving on the screen. Wild

You're so Rob Bell! (and I mean that in a good way). Love this format, you seriously are a great speaker and we really only see your writer side here. Definitely looking forward to more. My only critique would be the pace. Slow it down, we're in no rush. Nice work man.

Fast and upbeat songs are some of the hardest for me to pick. There have been some weeks where I've been drawn to wanting to do an entire service of just slow songs, but I resist it because I usually think the congregation would be bored. Maybe I need to rethink that.

I think the real beauty of self-hosting is not just the nitty-gritty of the cpanel but also the flexibility of your own blog installation gives you. The exploration happens more with finding plugins that suit your lifestyle, exploring the vast array of themes. I don't see any problem with SimpleScript for the initial process, and hopefully these processes continue to get easier to where even redirects become a few small clicks. It's an odd balance between finding something user-friendly enough to engage students, but also flexible enough to challenge them to "become their own sysadmins" instead of simply leaning on whatever hot startup has a quick fix for them.

This is the kind of funding model Kickstarter was built for, though it seems most of their projects are design/art based. I do wonder if "funding an education" is a new enough concept that they might latch on to it. I would reach out to them to see, because I think you'd have an even larger audience to draw from. The only difference would be if funding wasn't met the money would be distributed back to the donors automatically. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to try and build a model for receiving money for what you do, which I know is incredibly hard to do. One question, is the April 15th deadline on ChipIn a deadline for you to make payment to Harvard or just a random date you chose? I'd imagine ongoing funding would allow those who don't have funds immediately (*cough*a friend..you know...*cough*) to jump in soonish with money.

Also, I started following you through Jabiz and though that hasn't been long I just want to tell you how much I admire what you've done and continue to do here. I truly hope to see you accomplish this.

Man you have such an eye for video. I love the shots, especially the panning of focus from background to foreground on some spots. That being said, my favorite is at 2:33 when your reflection shows up holding a camera right after all the ghosts. :)

I've used the TouchOSC route as well using LiveControl (http://liine.net/livecontrol/) but recently also saw "touchAble" in the App store and it looks tempting as well (http://itunes.apple.com/us/.... Both require Ableton running on another computer but the interface is super sexy.

This is so great that you got a chance to interview Clay Shirky, and I enjoyed most of it. But there is one area I take issue with:

"Clay says he is happy to see people with iPads also using external keyboards. This means that the disappearance -as Jobs prophetically stated- of the computer is not complete yet and that people need to have a full computer to express their creativity."

I could point to countless examples to counter-argue this continual notion that an iPad is not a "real" computer capable of creative expression, but my guess is CS is both aware of those examples and ignoring them to paint broader stereotypes. People need tools to express their creativity. People who are accustomed to using a computer will feel more comfortable with that. Others will find the iPad offers a new way of expressing creativity. Let's not make the medium the message here and discount great pieces of work simply because some folks are uncomfortable without a keyboard and mouse. I don't see either of those devices attached to the smartphones every kid is carrying around, so I don't think the prediction they will become less relevant is unwarranted.
