Wick Allison (1948–2020)

He was truly a force of nature. The world will be a different, lesser place without him.

I still remember the first time I came unavoidably face to face with him, trapped in line at the Pearl Cup to get some lunch. He unexpectedly acknowledged me, asking me what I was doing that day to earn him some money in that tone that told you he was deadly serious and expecting a real answer.

I was still new to the company, and not entirely sure how to respond. But more than one person told me that, in addition to never popping popcorn in the office, I should never show him fear. So there I was clutching my wallet for dear life so he wouldn’t see my hands starting to shake, and when my mouth opened, some moxie from my depths decided I should say, “I’m winning you some awards today, actually.”

I should add that award submissions have always been one of my least favorite marketing tasks, and nothing I enjoy bragging about. But it was both the most honest and bold response I had when caught off balance. I smiled (probably more like a rictus of horror) and suffered that forever-second with his thousand-yard stare, wondering if his next words were going to be, “you’re fired.”

Instead he just threw his head back and I had my first experience with the great caw of his laugh. I felt like I had passed a test, gone through a rite of passage. I’ve also never been so relieved to order a sandwich and flee back to my cube to eat it while the flight response wore off and my cortisol returned to normal levels.

I still remember one day when he praised my work — what it was, I can’t remember. I shouldn’t have been surprised, since he noticed everything, but being at D Custom often felt a bit of a world away from the magazine. I was still filled with pride that he still noticed my work and liked it enough to say something. Coming from Wick, it held greater weight for me and always will.

Re: Watch Arrow‘s Stephen Amell Tear Through the American Ninja Warrior Course

You have to make sure it's Abs Island though. Knowing that the new Netflix Anne series takes great liberties with the story and even adds in things not in the books enrages me. And I actually refuse to watch the Emily of New Moon series because those books are even a bit more beloved to me than Anne.

I'm typically okay with adaptations of most things, but apparently L.M. It's beloved to me as the first major storyline I ever read in comics and the only place it's been told properly was in the 90s cartoon, bad voice acting and all.

In my mind, this is why the whole reboot with First Class should have been...the actual FIRST CLASS. Then we would have had time to care about the characters and build up the relationships to give the storyline the punch it needed. The backstory of Jean gaining the Phoenix powers could have been worked into subsequent movies prior to a Dark Phoenix movie, and it could have actually worked.

Re: All the Best Responses to the Captain America Was Always Evil Reveal

When Hercules Mulligan punches Nazis, they do NOT get the f*ck back up again.

Re: Hey Marvel! I keep wanting to read great comics, but they get cancelled so Marvel can do more of this reboot/crossover/event crap. I try to read those, but it gets so convoluted that I get confused.

One thing that WOULD be nice is a bit better organization in their digital comics subscription app, Marvel Unlimited. At least then when we go back to read these ridiculous event arcs they could be all collected in one place, even among the differing titles.

Re: Changing my Nail Game with Acrylic Powder “Dip” Nails

To be fair, most salons use LED lights now rather than UV to cure gel polish. I am a pretty hourglass-y shape, for reference. I grabbed a super soft one from Ava & Viv to try on the last time I was in Target and figured it would be made to fit me, as a lot of their stuff normally is—with as much room in the hips as it is in the shoulders. Yeah, no. It fit GREAT through the top but when I got past my waist (which is on the high side) I swear that shirt started narrowing. This is the problem with 99% of the chambray shirts out there and I hate it. :(

Re: Dear Fanboys Angry at Rogue One‘s “Mary Sue” …

*stands* *begins clapping slowly, increasing speed until it sounds like normal applause*

Re: Moleskine vs. Leuchtturm – The Great Debate

Bullet journaling really keeps me on task and gives me a clear outlook on my work ahead!

Re: Ask Allie: Personal Style with a Health Condition

Allie, this is such a thoughtful and thorough response! :)

Re: The Sound of Music a Promising Beginning to Dallas Summer Musicals Season

That piece of criticism is for the musical in general, not just this run. I know that the stage production doesn't have it, and to me that makes the first act feel a little unfinished. I would have liked to see it added in for later productions of the musical because I do think it adds a nice extra moment of build-up and tension that makes their romance feel less rushed. There is no reason why they couldn't have adjusted it, as new productions change things frequently, even for the classics. Plus, like I said, Ben Davis has a great voice and I would have loved to hear him sing it more than once!

Edited to add: I was, at that point, talking about the differences between the movie and musical, and can see how what I said could be misinterpreted based on my word choice. Sorry for the confusion!

Re: #ThisIs40: I Didn’t Wake Up Like This

I have been embracing the minimal makeup look a lot lately. I'm very lucky to have really good skin, though sometimes it can be very red, so I don't want to be caking it on to look more "done." My best discovery ever was Missha Perfect Cover BB cream...it is SO much better than any American BB cream out there. It actually protects my skin and makes it look better after I take it off, too. If you haven't tried it I highly recommend it! I'm pretty pale and their second lightest color works great for me. Just a pump of that all over, some blush, mascara and lipgloss and I can be out the door. Best part is that it looks like my skin, not makeup, and nobody asks me the dreaded "are you ok?"

Re: Outrageous: How the Jem and the Holograms Movie Completely Misses the Point

YES YES YES ALL THIS YES!

Re: An Answer to <em>Game of Thrones</em>' Biggest Mystery?

Lyanna Stark had dark hair, so his hair doesn't automatically nod toward Robert.

Re: Review: Sorry To Disappoint, But I Actually Really Loved Avengers: Age of Ultron

I kind of adored Bruce's "who, ME?!" incredulity that she would be interested in him, though.
