You know what? Anybody with a grain of intelligence can figure that out. It's a common mistake. Most people just read it, realize the % change error by the author, and move on. Maybe if this was a scientific research paper that had significant implications, we could make a big deal out of that. If you read on to the second half of the article, it talks about how the study addresses the issue of this "spike". They acknowledge that it is not repeatable in other areas, so there are likely other factors involved, but the other experiment and also the linked experiment from NY indicate that these types of bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure changes, as a minimum, do not negatively impact local businesses.

Any your methods (the phone call to the local business person) is still highly flawed and practically useless in analyzing the impact of this infrastructure change for reasons noted above.

Re: No, Bike Lanes Don't Hurt Retail Business - Eric Jaffe - The Atlantic Cities

Michael, I don't think that and I didn't say that. Anybody who has read and understood this article knows that you are misinterpreting the article here. Take a few minutes and read the second of the article, please.

Re: No, Bike Lanes Don't Hurt Retail Business - Eric Jaffe - The Atlantic Cities

Michael Anderson, your own methods are highly flawed, yet you feel qualified to critique someone else's methods? Just for starters, you cite a phone call to a local business person who describes a business across the street as "on the decline since 2010". Well, I suppose it's not the bike lane that's hurting them, then. Their input is also going to be biased. If you thought carefully about what you read in this article, you'd realized that your source of information is exactly what the article challenges as being unreliable. My guess is that these business owners (by their own admission) have been on the decline for a while now and they're looking for someone/something to blame other than their own bad business skills.

And secondly, you're trying to challenge actual data with subjective opinions? Seriously? Do you think that anyone is going to buy your line of thinking based on that? Imperfect as it is, I'll take the data analysis results any day.

Re: Gov. Gregoire: Something smells like a third-term run - Bremerton Patriot

Typical Ferguson column. No solutions, no ideas, no value added to the community. Just a bunch of negative attacks on a Democratic leader. This is the hollow, empty, negative attitude that got us to where we are today. This is why we elected a Democrat government, so that we can make positive progress, instead of wasting energy attacking others and complaining. There is nothing of value in this column.

Re: 'Free Choice Act' is really the 'No Choice Act' - Bremerton Patriot

Matt, that's a nice attempt at the end of your letter to tie the Democrat Party to the troubles in Detroit. It's easy to throw around a Rush Limbaugh-like comment with no supporting facts, but I'll remind you that this economic collapse happened under the GOP's watch. However, I'm sure you're ready to log into Rush's stack-of-stuff to find another baseless statement with no supporting facts that would tie this mess to the Clinton Administration. It's no accident that every recent period of GOP leadership of the federal government led to a recession. There are a lot of factors, but to provide you with a fact that supports this statement I'll point out that record deficit spending weakens the dollar. A weak dollar drives up prices because of our trade deficit. Try this little exercise in providing supporting facts the next time you want to throw around political accusations.

Re: Republicans lost when they out-porked the Dems | Adele Ferguson - Bremerton Patriot

Well, this article is as telling as Rush Limbaugh's website was the day after the 2006 elections (Rush stated that he was glad so many GOP were voted out because he was tire of "carrying their water." In other words, he was tired of telling lies to support the GOP). Adele, your paragraph 6 says that you're not a Republican, yet paragraph 2 states that McCain did not have your support until he got the GOP nomination. So that sums up the depth of analysis that goes into your voting preferences.

A few weeks ago I commented on how your election issues didn't even register on the national voting stage this year. Once again, you're off the mark this week with another issue most voters didn't care much about. I have to admit, though, I am on your side with opposing pork, which is why I primarily back Democrats. GOP politicians talk about fiscal conservatism, but we have 8 years of GOP to see what they really represent. Jeepers crimeny, you discuss this in your column so obviously you can see what's happening. How long does it take for you to accept what's going on and change your voting preferences?

And that leads me to point out the obvious point that McCain did not run against George W. Bush 4 years ago. Evidently you're more out of touch with the election cycle than I previously thought. And it's not surprising, reading your columns, that your election predictions came out so poorly.

One final point, a lot of people do care about stem cell research. You probably just don't hear about it much on Rush's radio show. Perhaps it's time to diversify.

Re: We can now say, ‘What have we done?’ - Bremerton Patriot

Ms. Ferguson, none of your talking points even registered as an issue in this election, save the taxes. You'll have to knock on a lot of doors in Kitsap County before you come across a household that will be subject to those $200k and $250k thresholds, so that's irrelevant, too. I'd be impressed if you had the gall to predict the failure of some of the significant changes that people voted Mr. Obama to make happen because that would set your column up for a real relevancy test. However, I clipped your article anyway so that in 4 and 8 years I can review it and answer the question "What have we done" just like we can answer that question right now for the 2000 and 2004 elections. (I look forward to fiscal responsibility and a restored position as a respected world leader.) When tax hikes come, you don't need to blame the Democrats, either. Bush has already spent that money. Now we will have to pay it back, plus interest. If you want to cut taxes, you start by reducing spending. You wondered how one person will go, line by line, through the federal budget. If you are paying any attention to the news, you would realize that a) unlike the Bush administration's unilateral leadership, Mr. Obama's administration will be a team of contributors who get things done, and b) Mr. Obama's team has a big head start because they have been preparing for the transition for months. Remember Mr. McCain's criticism of Mr. Obama for working on his inaugural address? Turns out he was working on a lot more than that, and it turns out that Mr. Obama is the one who will be ready to lead on day one. I hope you enjoy the benefits you will reap from the people who were wise enough to vote Barack Obama!
