I feel like my productivity has skyrocketed. Is it healthy to do this everyday? On the other hand, is there any potential risk to my health if I do it sporadically like one or two days in a row and then stop for a couple days and then go back on the fasting protocol for another couple of days?

Re: Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, Stay Focused & Feel Great

Thanks Armi! Two more questions. Let's say I do my weight lifting workout in the morning during the fast around 6AM. Won't this negatively impact muscle gain if I don't eat anything until 2:00 PM or do you recommend the leangains protocol of drinking BCAAs before and after the workout? Also, do you think Bulletproof coffee would have a different effect if I have it after the workout as apposed to before the workout?

Re: Guest Post: The Right Motion for Exploring Fitness - Explore Fitness -

Ah yes, trial and error are good friends of mine. Lately cooking is my biggest "trial and error" project. A friend of mine suggested I get a cookbook but that just isn't exciting enough! I like to wing it and see what I come up with...sometimes I knock it out of the park and sometimes it's just a complete disaster. But I like the process I guess, it's interesting and fun.

I wonder though, is this always the best way to learn? Or is it better to learn from someone or something else and THEN add your own trial and error?

I guess "best" is a relative term. If you want pure excitement and fun, trial and error is probably the way to go. But if you want most efficient then learning from someone or something else is probably best.

You got me really thinking about this Trial and Error thing Susan. I'm looking at what areas of my life I apply it and why.

Re: Guest Post: Why Measure When You're Exploring Fitness? - Explore Fitness -

Hi Susan, with my workouts, absolutely. I've been keeping a workout journal for years, it's actually one of the very few areas I keep a consistent and detailed "journal" if you will. I also journal and although there are no metrics associated with it, it helps me to find answers to questions that seem too hard to figure out in my head.

One thing I recently started to do consistently with my exercise log is to have a section at the top where I put what I ate prior to the workout to see if it has an effect on my workout intensity/energy. This is an area I'm experimenting with right now with various foods. It's really amazing what a little extra energy can do for you workout and therefore muscle building/fat burning etc.

I also have a section at the end where I put any thoughts or notes. If I felt tired during the workout I put that in there and if I think I know why I put that in there too. I also keep a log of what I eat (most of the time) but that's a bit more tedious so I miss meals and even days here and there but it gives me a general idea of what I'm doing and the results I'm getting. Lastly, I just started taking pictures from week to week so I can monitor that way too.

I've found having this type of stuff helps a ton down the road. If I get off track or want to get into the kind of shape I was in 2 years ago for example, I can just look at what I was doing as far as workouts and diets and I can see where I'm off and what I need to change.

Re: Chris Kresser: Beyond Paleo – #22

Awesome interview! It's like compound interest. The body responds - muscles get stronger and more toned and the body's fat burning systems kick into gear.

And since the exercise is only 5 minutes - the body doesn't need much recovery - like it does after a long run or strenuous workout - so you don't feel tired or in pain afterwards. Plus the body doesn't feel like it needs to replenish itself with a carb re-feed so it doesn't lead to over-consumption of fattening carbohydrate rich foods afterwards either.

Not here to bash running. I like running but there are better alternatives if the primary goal is weight loss.

Try resistance training - like body-weight workouts and I am sure you will be really happy with the results.

Re: Join Us for a Fizzle Meetup in Your City

This is such a great idea. Grip strength is important for any type of exercise and also has been shown to be a good predictor of longevity! I have used Gorrilla Grips in the past when I was working hard on increasing strength and doing heavy deadlifts. There comes a point when your entire body can handle the weight on the bar (during a deadlift) but your grip strength gives out first, preventing you from doing more reps. I used the Gorrilla Grips as a way to strengthen my grip but then developed an elbow strain. I don't know if it was from the Gorrilla Grips or just the fact that I was doing a lot of heavy weight exercises like weighted pullups, weighted dips etc. but I stopped using them altogether. You know what I found to be the best way to strengthen the grip?Putting in and tearing out carpets! Manual labor is probably the best exercise for grip strength! And it builds all around body/functional strength too!
