"Influence" as an online metric is a bit of a misnomer as it connotes influence offline. Also agreed that some of the "influencers" are nobodies and there are plenty of people offline that are doing much, much more to make an impact.

Influence measurement, even online, is still in its infancy. Right now, everyone is just measuring what *can* be measured - and it turns out, that's easy to do when you have data in a decent format floating around the internet.

There are people and companies that will be underrepresented as "Influencers" for a long time because they don't occupy the same space and fill out the same metrics as others do (they don't have a Twitter account, etc). If you haven't already, check out the article "The No-Stats All-Star", it's about just this thing.

Until we find a way to measure it, we'll all be at a loss, but we're doing our best until we get there.

Jesse Crouch
Infochimps Product Manager

Re: Data junkie startup Infochimps opens wealth of features for Twitter developers

Thanks for the writeup! I'll answer all your questions in this one post. My replies are marked with ---:

>Matthias Daues
>Hello Infochimps, how often do you refresh the dataset?

---Planning every quarter currently. We will increase as demand increases.

>fashion tool
>You should consider including frequency of postings, (like, daily vs. every six months) as a part of your algorithm. Or bit.ly click-thrus and retweets. Right now you rank a similar-sounding twitter ID higher than mine, but (a) they didn't pioneer the category offline or on the web, (b) they're practically a twitter handle squatter that tweets only every six months (c) they happened to register on Twitter much earlier than we did so they have 2X the followers. (9,000 vs 4,500.) They add little to the conversation topic and I doubt they've ever been retweeted. So before you start pushing this as a metric of value, deepen the data set so that you're validating the right users. (The ones to trust.)

---We are currently discussing ways to improve the ranking accuracy and meaning. Many of your concerns are being discussed in our conversations. We will post as soon as we change anything.

>Christine Taylor
>I am not finding several twitter users @chrisgtaylor

---Your username will be included in our next update. This may be about a month from now.

>Liz Pullen
>Have you actually looked at @NotTinaFey's account? Until March, she hadn't Tweeted since the Summer of 2009. Then whoever runs that account just came back because it had been hacked. And it's NOT Tina Fey!
There has to be a problem with your system if an inactive Twitterer can rank among your top users group. To be influential, people have to actually write a few Tweets, if not every day, then every week. Real celebrities or imaginary ones shouldn't forget about their Twitter account for 9 months, write one or two messages & still be considered influential.

---Agreed. Please see my reply above, someone had a similar question. We'll be adding things shortly to improve upon how people are ranked.

- Jesse at infochimps.org

Re: The Perpetual Need For Self Defense

I have to agree. Other thing is - 'who started it' as we see it isn't about who 'deserved' it either. No outsider can know the conflict by just looking at the two people. If you're of the belief that no person should ever harm another physically then neutralizing would be an option. To me, I would need to know much more about the situation to make a decision I could live with.

But our answers are a perfect reason why it is up to the individual to learn how to defend him/herself. You cannot rely on the crowd.

Re: How to Choose a Karate Uniform (Or Gi)

Highly recommend Century's middle-weight or heavy-weight pants. I wear the middle weight ones as pants outside of martial arts work and they're great for just about anything - only problem with them is that they only have one back pocket - only thing about them that makes them bad for the rest of the day - it's good for martial arts though, less to snag on.
I believe the middleweight century uniforms are 10oz.

The heavy-weight ones are like cardboard when you first get them, but they're virtually un-bustable.

Also, would never recommend anything less than 12oz for any art that has falling or any ground or even standing grappling work involved. Just look for something that says it's good for judo, aikido, jiujitsu, brazilian jiujitsu or mma. Anything less will usually tear up pretty quickly if you're doing any serious contact with the ground. Ground contact will destroy your gi more than almost anything else will.

Re: New Ebook Coming Out Tomorrow (Friday)…

awesome! cant wait

Re: Should MY Black Belt Mean Anything to You?

Hey Marc -

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I know way too many people who refuse to think outside of their style because of this sort of thinking. A big problem is the failure to communicate goals in each scenario.. one person sees it one way because his scenario is different than the other guy's.

Big point I want to bring up though: There is a big difference between opinions on style and plainly just doing something wrong. You haven't confused the two at all in your article, but to everyone: being open doesn't mean you can't point out when people are doing something that just plainly won't work, no matter what they do.

Re: A Street Thug Who Makes Trouble At the Wrong Doorstep

I saw this awhile back. I've got a different take on it. I don't think he dealt with it safely enough. The guy on defense puts up with way too much. The attacker becomes physically violent with him and all he does is push him away. He should've either escaped, continued making the attacker leave or restrained him.

Also, not really sure why he came out of his house and certainly don't understand why he didn't just go back in. I don't really understand what the situation is here.. is it his house he's standing in front of? If it's not, why is he there? There's no reason to stand out there and 'be a man' and put yourself in harms way.

Lots of worse stuff could've happened to this guy and he did little to prevent it.

Re: The Art of Standing (or Sitting) There

WRT self defense and posture - I've always taught two things:
- Stand up straight
- Don't make eye contact

These rules apply to a lot of situations, but the most common being: you're walking down a sidewalk, can't cross to the other side, some bad dudes are walking the opposite direction so your paths must cross.

Showing confidence saves you from being attacked in the human world just as it does in the rest of nature. Don't make eye contact though as it provokes emotion and speaks to the other person more than you should say (which should be nothing).

Other interesting note: I learned my posture and breathing from singing, not martial arts.

Re: Four Lies and One Martial Arts Fact…

Haha.
