yeah--i heard it more as frustrated and flustered than dismissive. but it
is a dangerous, as you say, potentially explosive, turn of the tongue. i'd
rather he didn't say it.

and for what it's worth--i couldn't be happier about the RNC passing out
tire gauges. hopefully folks will use them and save themselves some scratch
at the pump!

country. bold and ambitious and forward looking, as i believe it needs to

Love this idea. Someone get me Neil Young on the horn! I'll talk him into model high-speed mag lev trains (model trains have always run electric!!!) and we could model the whole high-speed corridor routes for America's 21st Century transportation future!

and i do want to follow up and say that i don't write any of the above in a knee-jerk combative way. i love the debate. and think you've got a smart take on a lot of things. just didn't want to come across as a prick or anything. it just bums me out how the energy debate--energy, i honestly believe, being the fundamental challenge and opportunity for america in the 21st century--has been reduced to lame insults and ignorant (not you, not anyone who thinks and is considerate, but the limbaugh reactionary stubborn hot-headed violently partisan types) statements.

and I think it's important to here note that proper maintenance is in no way the only plank on obama's energy platform, nor the only solution proposed for directly reducing comprehensive fuel costs for americans. proper maintenance was an example of the variety of solutions we need to consider. and the "ignorance" line certainly wasn't directed at you (among others), but at the republican attack machine and the hard right media who laughed off the suggestion (which mccain later agreed was a good idea) as being a joke. the fact that an engaged and informed audience like yourself is under the impression that proper automobile maintenance is obama's naive silver bullet solution is particularly troubling. he's long called for the "silver buckshot" approach, that was particularly well outlined in his new energy plan outlined monday. please do give it a read (i'm assuming you haven't already otherwise you would've known that inflating tires was merely an example of smart conservation strategy), even if you don't agree with the proposals, it'll give you better foundation to lob your criticisms from. because picking up on this one line and taking it so far out of context is way too reductive.
