Thanks for posting the video, Geoff...I followed the link from Gary's site, and just subscribed to your blog. I'm glad that folks like Gary are shining a light on the social media "carpetbaggers"; at the same time, I agree with both of you that the market will eventually take care of them, just as it has in real estate and is starting to in SEO. I just hope it's not as painful for the small businesses who get fooled by these unscrupulous guys and gals as it was for the homeowners who got taken by them during the RE boom.

COD beat me to the punch. If we relied on the government to "provide" free speech, we'd all be screwed. ;)

That said, I think you're right: free speech is alive and well, and Amazon is dead wrong in their decision to allow this evil man to sell his book on their site.

Check out Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the court decision that established the Brandenberg Test:

"The Brandenburg test - Merely teaching or advocating unpopular ideas must be distinguished from teaching or advocating the duty, necessity, or propriety of acting on those beliefs. The right to speak and organize cannot be abridged no matter if the group's message and purpose are repugnant to American values (such as KKK speech). In order for government to intervene, the speaker must subjectively intend incitement (imminent evil), use words which are likely to produce action (imminent action), and openly encourage or urge incitement (suggesting, for example, it's a duty to commit a crime)."

Does this book pass the test? I don't know, and I'm not going to read it to find out. In my view, this isn't about protecting the free speech of pedophiles; it's about protecting children from pedophiles. Amazon has a responsibility here; they need to man up and say that this isn't OK.

As always, you've done a masterful job of dealing with a sensitive subject. Based on today's attitudes, I'm not so sure my own immigrant ancestors would have made the cut. Seems like there should be such a thing as balance, but that's an idea that seems to have gone out of style lately. It seems the extremists on both sides have taken over the conversation...and that's a little like letting the lunatics run the asylum, isn't it? I'm glad there are moderate voices like yours to bring us back to reality. Cheers!

Your posts about stupid people always crack me up. I have a novel in the works, and the opening line is "The world is full of stupid people." I love that you've expanded that to include the entire cosmos!

Your suggestion to add a qualifying statement to the opinions of the stupid people in your life is superb! If you can mentally preface every negative statement you hear from other people with "in my opinion," their negativity will have a much smaller impact on you.
