Between vacations, sick days, meetings, etc., the typical worker is only IN the office 50% of the time. Worse, the typical worker is only AT his/her desk or office some 35% of the time (ie., a meeting down the hall counts 'against' his/her time at his/her desk or office).

I consider myself pretty digital, but I will interact much better during those serendipitous interactions when people walk by, or I run into them in the hallway.

All that said, I do agree that most people will choose the private office, but for not the best reasons. For example, people will choose it for the traditional sense of status or to revert to the traditional sense of entitled property rights. But letting go of some property rights and privacy yields much greater returns for collaboration, awareness of your surroundings, etc. And YES, for sure, employers push for open office space simply for the better economics.

Re: Corporate Executives Anticipate Increase in Alternative Workplace Strategies

"Coworking" spaces have already popped up all over the country. They address the community, networking, and camraderie that home office people, café workers, and even executive suite professionals lack. We here at BLANKSPACES.com in Los Angeles, have been even more successful and effective: people have not only hired each other, they've begun to form loose "collectives" that get hired as an entire team by clients outside of the BLANKSPACES office space! Now, THAT is the way entrepreneurism works in the downsizing economy.

Re: 150 is greater than 1

I like your ideas and your eye for space. I started www.BLANKSPACES.com with similar objectives. Take a look at our www.BLANKSPACES.com/interact page, including the flickr photos via the left nav button. We should talk sometime!

Re: Three Rules of Why Coworking Sucks

Hi. I'm almost afraid to throw in my 2 cents here, but I thought I'd try to let you know that there are more amped up coworking spaces out there, such as:
http://www.BLANKSPACES.com/... (also see http://www.flickr.com/photo...
http://www.launchpadcoworki... (opening in September)
http://www.lebu.biz/

The "collaborative" and "community" aspects really kick in two ways, at least for us at BLANKSPACES:
1. We have a slew of events here, some hosted by us; others who rent our space to run their own events/mixers.
2. People here are already HIRING each other. In this way, this is an undisputed scenario in which a variety of people work together better than apart.

Jerome
