I have to agree with Anne -- I like the nametag on cover #2. I identified with it immediately. Already thinking of people's photo submissions where they write their own names on the cover. =)

Oh man.... so many I could think of if I took some time. Some ones that should be buried ESPECIALLY deep:

- Bandwidth ("I just don't have the bandwidth right now")
- Deep dive/deeper dive
- Circle back
- ROI
- Rock star (Especially in reference to social media -- same for "maven", "guru" and "expert" -- like nails on a chalkboard!) IMHO, if you're REALLY any of these things, no one should be going out of his or her way to explain it.
- "Hive mind"
- Low-hanging fruit -- gah!

Wow. Who is this "Twitter skeptic" guy? He just sits there mouth agape, and says Twitter "could become big"?? I don't know how much the guy actually spends time with or reads up on Twitter. I'm glad you were shaking your head, Gary. Also, Twitter Search helps me every day in my personal and professional life. This panel doesn't get it.

Congrats on making this decision, Gary... you can't ever stop learning if you want to grow. There is nothing wrong with focusing your attention so that you can get *really* good at what you do. Not everyone will understand this, but the folks who want your business (and the people whose attention YOU want) will appreciate that focus.

Playing the devil's advocate here, though I agree with you -- if you're going to hustle, you have to MAKE the time. No moaning about lost time if you're watching television -- even running on the treadmill is better than being idle if you're going to watch the tube.

The only thing I'd say (and your point about sleeping one less hour each night) is that over time, your body may adjust to this, but in the beginning stages, be prepared to lose that saved time to illness. A fit mind and a fit body are much more beneficial to someone who's trying to be effective with their time. Take care of yourself first. The rest will follow.

This post only helped to emphasize the importance of a very fundamental part of marketing: the marketing mix (known to every marketing undergrad as "the 4 P's"). This mix has to include "Place," or distribution, and Promotion, which INCLUDES educating store personnel on the product.

You can spit out high-priced television and print adverts until you're blue in the face, but if that message doesn't carry over to the people who, in the end, will sell much of your product face-to-face, your dollars will be wasted. Especially with a product such as shoes, which are much tougher to convey comfort and fit online, the in-store experience is key.

This is one of the reasons mystery shopping is so prevalent -- brands want to know that their marketing plans have follow-through. Having tried a "mystery shopper" role in the past, I can tell you that the majority of the assignments just involved showing up and taking pictures or otherwise confirming that the displays mandated for a store actually went up.

I am so excited about this group -- this is exactly the kind of community I have been searching for. Do you have any suggestions on how to best justify this annual membership cost to our managers/employers, as community management is still a relatively new concept at many companies?

I agree with bflopete, she's a dynamic performer. I saw her in New Hampshire a few years back, and though I got ribbed by some of my friends about it (most of them making Lilith Fair-type jokes) I had a great time. Her voice lends itself well to haunting themes, and her work with Delerium shouldn't be overlooked. Two favorites of mine: "Good Enough" and "Song for a Winter's Night".
