While there are a number of technical positives in this article, there are a few problems with the thinking behind the main points. One of them is this:"The best way to improve profit margin is to lower your costs..." This is a transactional strategy that should never be utilized. You don't shrink your way to success. You grow your way to it. You improve margins by adding meaningfully, differentiated value and repositioning yourself as a leader in your own market, not by being the cheapest commodity on the shelf.

Well I've worked in restaurants for four decades. The nationality variable is meaningless. Some? Try most...especially those who, once exposed to the potential tip amounts they can earn, are forced to go tipless, only to demand a return to the tip culture. There is no "virtually," that's simply not the reality. Cooks, like anyone at that level, want more money and some. like you, think they deserve a "cut". They do not. The Guest Experience is created, managed and made special by the efforts of FOH staff. If cooks want more money they have 2 choices: add more value to their existing jobs or move up front.

Sites like Wix and Squarespace are the LAST places you'd want to use because when you're done, you DON'T own your site. Also, there's no such thing as 'optimized for mobile"...your site should be responsive which means it operates on all platforms - desktop, tablet or mobile.

Secondly, as for social media: it's not about your posts but the posts of your Guests. If you're not creating experiences that make Guests want to post about you and their experiences with you, then you're creating bad experiences.

The rest is ok to good.

There's no such thing as "equity in the restaurant". And "fairness"? Please. Both employees and Guests have said repeatedly and loudly, they want tips. Any "indignation" arises from an operator's inability to lead their people.

So many errors in this level of thinking as well as deeper context. Let's utilize Occam's razor: Over 100 million people are now out of the workforce (unemployed or under-employed)...so how many belong to which category? A simple demographic analysis is the superficial perspective. For an operator to truly understand his own context, he must dive deep into his guest's psychographic data - though most do not have the experience or the inclination to do so. This is why being an owner-operator is much more complex today than just 10 years ago.

I really love these articles by people who have never owned or operated a successful restaurant but who think they have expertise simply because they eat out a lot. Or, in this case some guy who posts a lot to facebook thinks he understands loyalty. There is nothing in this article that is even remotely useable for operators or even adds to the discussion about nurturing loyalty in a restaurant. He even gets the study wrong - which he probably didn't even read. Just another reason this site is nothing more than an ad farm.
