Webvan, which actually started as a company with the name "Intellegent Systems for Retail" did not exist in 1996. The company changed it's name to Webvan in 1999 when it came out of stealth mode.

Re: Apple needs to do more for parents

Robert, I agree that there are things that we want our kids to use our iDevices for. I'm pretty anal about my phone though. It's either in my pocket or hand when I'm awake or on my night stand when I'm asleep. I don't have a problem getting my kids their own devices. Someone mentioned below that there are already some locks available in iOS to keep people from installing/deleting apps, and making other changes etc. Apple could go a little further with these though. As mentioned below, I think a good solution to the multi user issue would be for Apple to add user accounts to iOS, at least on the iPad.

Re: Entrepreneurs offer their life’s future earnings for an investment

It's worse. The cropping and other modifications such as converting to B&W, adjustment of contrast and addition of vignetting, all allowed mind you, dramatically changes the context, mood and message of the image. Removing the shoe in the background, which appears as a small white blotch in the final image is trivial compared to the other alterations and hardly effects the integrity or message of the image. The photographer could have just as easily moved over the the left 3 inches and the shoe would have been hidden, yielding virtually the same image. It seems to me that the World Press Photo Organizations rules are misguided at best and down right hypocritical. Allowing dramatic alterations and cropping are no better worse or different than dodging out a distraction in the background of the image. They can't have it both ways. If they are looking for integrity, maybe they should require all images be shot in .jpg format and submitted as shot out of the camera with no external alterations. And while they are at it, to level the playing field, maybe they should specify the camera body, lens and all camera settings, time of day the image can be shot and the specific lighting conditions that all images should be shot under!

Re: Entrepreneurs offer their life’s future earnings for an investment

This is such a bad idea, I don't know where to begin! You are essentially mortgaging your future, until you die! You become an indentured servant for life to whomever lends you money with this deal. Because the wrong type of turbines were installed in a cold climate, does not have anything to do with the viability of the technology! Clearly the people in Minnesota who chose those particular turbines did not do their homework. As pointed out in several comments above, wind turbines have been installed in harsh climates for decades without problems. To knock wind turbines or any other power generation method because it does not operate at 100% of it's optimum output is both naive and ridiculous. Anyone who is considering installing any type of power generation plant will do a cost vs output analysis and should fully understand the actual vs peak output of their installation.

Re: The Tablet Business Is Clearly Not Easy Business

I don't understand why everyone is completely writing the CrunchPad off as dead. There is a slim possibility that Arrington will prevail in court or the other side will come to their senses and go away leaving Arrington to move forward with another vendor. Or they could mend their fences and proceed. I believe there is a significant market for a $300-400 tablet device that people can use to surf the web while sitting on the couch. The Kindle is a clear proof of concept in my opinion, that a tablet is something people want and it is even more use specific than a tablet running Windows, Chrome or another OS.

Re: louisgray.com: At 5:04 P.M. At first the car began to wobble and it felt like I had a flat tire. Then the shaking became more violent. Traffic stopped dead on the freeway. I thought about getting out of the car, I didn't think I'd be able to stand up. This was before all of the sound walls were built along 101, so I could see all of the people running out of the office buildings that lined the frontage roads along 101. The street lights were swaying violently. I was listening to KCBS on the radio and the sound went dead. I knew then that this was a serious event. Once the shaking stopped, traffic began to move again on the freeway. 101 flowed ok, but once I got off the freeway at Brokaw road, traffic was a huge snarl. The power was out between the freeway and my condo in north San Jose and it took about an hour to complete the trip home, which would have usually taken about 10 minutes. In that hour two aftershocks hit. When I returned home, my neighbor had just finished filling the condo complexe's swimming pool up, he said that about 3 feet of water had sloshed out of the pool during the tremor. Upon entering my condo I found all of my furniture had relocated itself about 6 inches from where I had left it that morning. The only damage I personally experienced was a couple of glass bottles of juice that had fallen off the top of the refrigerator and broken on the floor and a broken picture frame. Our condo complex fared very well. There was no structural damage to the buildings, which were only about 3 years old. We did have quite a bit of cracking in the concrete paths and sidewalks around the complex, but the builder was nice enough to replace all of the cracked concrete over the next few months.

Re: The Sad Cafe

Great post Steven! Louis, thanks for the plug. I have to admit that I have been very delinquent in posting new photos to my flickr stream and photo blog in the past 6+ months. I have been taking just as many photos as I always have, but have a several month backlog in processing and posting them. (Spending too much time on FF maybe?) Now that I know people enjoy seeing my photos, this will give me some incentive to get more of them posted.

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader "Likes" Find the More Shy Blog Readers

Hey Louis,

Thanks for featuring me in your blog post! Definitely not offended by the shy reference. Also thanks for following me on Friendfeed. I don't produce that much original content, but I do follow some obscure photography and green energy blogs and try to share interesting articles from them. I hope you find my shares interesting. I noticed you followed me on Twitter also. I'm honestly not very active there, I have never quite figured out how I would benefit from using Twitter as opposed to Friendfeed. I much prefer the FF interface with threaded comments to Twitter's interface.

Thanks for all the great content you post, I get a lot of benefit from your articles, especially your observations on social media and the new and hot techie things you discuss.

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader "Likes" Find the More Shy Blog Readers

Louis, I've been following your blog for quite a while. I use Google Reader to view all of my media follows, and I'm an active participant on Friendfeed. Most if not all of my blog comments these days are on Friendfeed.
