Great topic for consideration by young (or new) makers. We talk about passion in my classroom. And while it's not perfect, I have my students consider this line of thinking: If you have passion for something (intrinsically compelling motivation) and you give it purpose (intent and direction) you can achieve your goals (fulfillment, security, etc.)
As always thanks for sharing with the community.

Re: What Do We Really Mean When We Say ‘Personalized Learning’?

I agree with Ms Laufenberg that the distinction is to be made between personalized learning - learning that is student centered and inquiry driven toward an intrinsically determined goal as separate from personalized instruction - instruction individualized by (computer) algorithm or learning path designed (forward or backward) toward an extrinsically identified goal. As such, personalized instruction may be used in personalized learning.

Re: Free Technology for Teachers: City Data - Statistics and Discussions About Cities

I also like zipskinny.com for similar datasets searchable by zipcode.

Re: Free Technology for Teachers: City Data - Statistics and Discussions About Cities

I have also found zipskinny.com to be a great resource for similar datasets sorted by zipcode.

Re: Free Technology for Teachers: 7 Tools for Creating Mind Maps and Outlines Online

I would like to suggest two (free) concept/mind mapping tools that I have found to be quite good. Cmap Tools and VUE ( Visualizing Understanding Environment)

Cmap Tools is a product of the Institute of Human and Machine Cognition (in my hometown of Pensacola, FL). "The IHMC Cmap Tools software empowers users to construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as Concept Maps" http://cmap.ihmc.us/

"The Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) is an Open Source project based at Tufts University. The VUE project is focused on creating flexible tools for managing and integrating digital resources in support of teaching, learning and research. VUE provides a flexible visual environment for structuring, presenting, and sharing digital information." http://vue.tufts.edu/

Re: Moodle: On Chats and Time

We don't have that problem in our district. The chat module is not available. Violates AUP.

Re: Moodle: On Chats and Time

Would it be too much trouble to make the chat "invisible" to the students as soon as the class is over? I don't know if you have time at the end of class or access to editing your moodle during a class period, but that may be one way to effectively end the chat.
