These are more just my idea for an alternate Minecraft that wouldn't necessarily be better.

1) A trunk block takes ages to cut down and you can't really do it with your bare hands. Eventually you can, but your first action in minecraft won't be to punch a tree to death.
2) Trees spawn twig blocks along the trunk that connect nicely to a leaf block. Snap them off with one punch and the leave block bursts too. They drop a stick.
3) Mountain sides now have rocks. These are quick to destroy, aren't perfectly square (think of a cube with rounded corners), and aren't as big as a full cube - think maybe half as tall and wide. They follow gravity like sand does. Destroying a rock gets you one or two stone chips - they're like flowers. You use stone chips to make stone tools.
4) No more wood tools.
5) Destroying rock with your stone pickaxe returns lots of stone chips instead of a single cobblestone block. Craft 9 stone chips together to make cobblestone. You get between 6 and 12 stone chips per stone block, so it evens out.
6) When you get your stone axe, you can chop down the tree at any height. It still takes a little while, but when you destroy a block, every block above it that isn't connected to a leaf, twig, or trunk block gets destroyed. The trunks return trunks, the twigs return twigs, and some of the leaves return saplings.
7) When you destroy the bottom most trunk block, it returns trunk and destroys the tree as normal, but leaves a tree stump about as tall as a crust of snow. This takes even longer to destroy, drops nothing, and survives burning too (think about it).

I basically only say this because I always leave the bottom block when I'm cutting down trees so that I'm left with lots of tree stumps.

Re: Survival Mode Multiplayer is priority #1

"Maybe instead of trying to make some fancy new thing you can give us" ...some fancy new things.

Re: Calm before the storm?

The first comment on this before was a really awesome funny picture of a crafting recipe for a mushroom on a stick for controlling saddled piggies. Notch didn't advertise a finished product. He's letting us have a sneak peek of the Alpha - the unfinished product that isn't yet feature-complete, let alone bug free - as a pre-order bonus. You also get a big discount.

Of course we have the right to offer feedback and let him know what we think - that's one of the main reason's he went for this set up - but most of the criticism here borders on abuse. Abuse is never justified.

I also agree that Notch is trying to run a business and certainly isn't trying to be Santa, but I want to offer a caveat. What would Activision do if the server that lets people pay for and play their flagship game broke? Which of those two features would they get working again if they had to choose between them?

Re: How piracy works.

Why would it be? Notch doesn't charge a monthly sub for Minecraft. Blizzard charge a monthly sub for World of Warcraft, and if you don't pay, you're not allowed to play their game. If you copy the server and play on that for free, it's an effort to circumvent that - like using a space cloning hyper-laser to create a free MacDonalds next to every real MacDonalds. It's like messing with your water meter so they don't think you're using any water - you're still using it, but it's outside of their system.

Of course, I appreciate where you're coming from - you're obviously looking at Blizzard as people running a server, not designing a game and holding all the rights like angry keeper goblins - but that's not how the law looks at it at all. At least, not here, and not in the USA either.

Re: How piracy works.

Why, what do you find yourself using gold for in real life?

Re: The going-ons of starting up a company

STEP AWAY FROM THE FANHAMMER

Re: How piracy works.

You'd get inter-server strip miners who would build a giant citadel and gradually mine outwards, then move all their shit to their own homeworld-server through a dark energy portal.

Re: How piracy works.

You can save to the cloud, or you can save to disk and then get home every day and go NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MY TREE HOUSE like I do currently.

Re: How piracy works.

Doesn't it come under stealing money from them?

Re: How piracy works.

GOLD.

BARS.

Re: How piracy works.

I agree with you about the LAN thing.

Blizzard are releasing a trilogy of games, though. I don't have the time to provide a sorted list of links and documentation (which are very easily publicly available for scrutiny). Again, it's more than just my random claim. It's public opinion and knowledge. Go read about them, nearly anywhere."

I'd like to branch this discussion off here - I don't want to talk to you about paypal - to say that I really dislike this line of thinking. Saying "there is evidence, go look derp" is the domain of chat show hosts. If you want to assert that something is true, get off your ass, do the damn legwork, and link to one of these many articles that are apparently swimming all over the internet. No-one can argue with evidence.

Re: Working on a Friday update, crying over paypal

Fuck, I'd buy it again if it came to that.

Re: Hiring some people, getting an office, and all that!

Well you sound like you know your stuff.
