A friend of mine with depression says she has a doppelganger who is actually functional. This will get better; you will move into your own life. Sleep is so necessary. I hope you have help, and support (and possibly medication?) to get you through this time.

Re: Sally Sets Boundaries

We're in the midst of adolescence with a kid we have parented in much the same way LA describes. It's true that not every moment is a sheer joy...but overall it's wonderful. I love having a teenager. She talks to us more than she ever did. Last week she said "My friends are amazed that I talk to you about sex and stuff. I think it sucks that they can't talk to their parents." That's what we're going for.

Re: Sally Sets Boundaries

Oh, yeah. My daughter (16) will review every picture I take of her. Some she approves. Some she says I can keep as long as I don't post them anywhere. Some she deletes. The creation of the middle category (I keep them and don't post them) took some negotiation. If she hadn't agreed, I'd delete them (much as I find her assessment of these photos absurd.)

Re: Supergirl’s Jeremy Jordan: My Gay Cousin Has Been Sent to a Christian Home for Troubled Teens

I expect it will hold up just fine. Our approach is very similar and I love having a teenager. She's smart and funny and cares about her friends and has political opinions and likes to talk to us about them (some days.) We treat her with respect and we expect the same in return. Mostly we get it, and I am comfortable that if she's every really in trouble, she'll be able to come to us. That's my primary goal.

Re: TV Corner: Grace & Frankie

I watched both seasons earlier this month when I was home after surgery. Absolutely adored it. And I'm also rooting for Dolly Parton to make a guest appearance. I'm surprised at how thoroughly Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen have made me forget Jack McCoy and Jed Bartlet. Jane Fonda takes my breath away. She is SO amazingly good. I don't think I saw her in anything in between "On Golden Pond" and "Newsroom" and she is freaking amazing. So so so good.

Re: The Invisible Worry Work of Mothering

I don't feel guilty. I feel left out of the female experience; a lot of bonding among women is based on this "men! amirite?" kind of chatting, and that's how a lot of women see their value. Since I don't have that experience, and my value to my household isn't based on my ability to "see dirt" or remember appointments. I don't exist.

Re: The Invisible Worry Work of Mothering

It also happens in the workplace.

Re: The Invisible Worry Work of Mothering

This is the kind of post that always makes me feel like not-a-real-girl and non-a-real-mom. I'm not the only person in my house who notices that we're out of toilet paper or various foodstuffs; sometimes I have to ask my husband where to find things in the kitchen; he's far more likely to know whether or not we have clean sheets than I am; he keeps track of our daughter's dental appointments because he takes her. I get that she's describing a common experience for women and I agree that it's not accidental. In fact, my experience proves that men are capable of seeing and remembering all kinds of household information. These posts always make me feel invisible and inauthentic.

Re: Fat Fashion

For workout/hiking clothing, try Junonia, which has rebranded itself as Juno Active. http://www.junonia.com/ They specialize in athletic/outdoor clothing for plus sizes. I've bought workout clothing, sweats, underwear and sports bras there and I've always been pleased with the quality and the service.

Re: Question of the Day

When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a nurse. My father was a doctor, my grandfather was a doctor, I wanted to be a nurse. Dad suggested I sign up to be a candy striper so I could make an informed decision. He was right. Six months after I started (at age 14), I realized a) I really hate wounds and b) nurses who are smart and ambitious are often promoted out of patient care. It was the 1970s, I'd never heard of nurse practitioners, and I decided to be a doctor. Never budged, and yes, I've been practicing medicine for nearly 30 years.

Re: Shaker Gourmet: Cookbook Edition

My favorite cookbook is anything from Cook's Illustrated/Cook's Country/America's Test Kitchen. Since they don't take ads, you have to pay for everything from the website and the cookbooks are expensive. It irritates me every time - and I keep paying because everything *works*. For actual cookbooks, I love The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook by Diana Shaw. We're not vegetarian but a lot of our friends are, and everything we've made from this book is yum. I'm about to make a pot of black beans with orange and saffron (our standard and entirely non-traditional erev Rosh Hashanah veggie entree).

Re: Fat Fashion

I love the tights from welovecolors. I machine-wash mine (horrors!) and they wear like iron. Love them. Did I mention I love them?

For jeans - i have a pair from SWAK that make me feel great. I did take them to be shortened and it was totally worth it. I've also been happy with Lands End jeans - I buy the petites even though I'm 5'5" (what IS it with ridiculous long pants??)

Re: An account of sexual assault at the P-Rade

I really hope you're addressing the author, and not the slapper.

Re: Fat Fashion

For shoes - Gabriella Rocha http://vip.zappos.com/women... Very comfy, reasonably priced, cute and sexy. Love them. I can wear heels to work. Amazing.

For Catherine for the Lambda awards - wrap dresses are easy and can be very sexy/glam with the right shoes and jewelry. I wear a lacy cami underneath for coverage. I have a black-and-white polka dot dress I bought last year that makes me feel like a pin-up - I love it. It's from IGIGI and they don't have that dress shown now but they have several others that look like fun http://www.igigi.com/plus-s...

Re: Question of the Day

Yeah! Actual, lovely, luxuriant lather. Yum. Everywhere here stopped carrying it so I now order it from Amazon in large quantities. Also really like the Earth Science fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner.

I had been looking for a fragrance-free detangler for my daughter, who has long curly hair, and the woman who cuts my hair suggested she try a spray bottle of water. Works like a charm.

On the shoez! front, Beautifeel shoes are amazing. I wear their heels to work and I NEVER wear heels to work.

Re: more on grammar

I have the opposite problem with the passive voice - I despise the way scientific writing uses the passive voice to remove the first person from any account. Instead of saying "I observed", a journal article will read "it was observed". This perpetuates the notion of science as entirely objective and devoid of bias, which is impossible for any human endeavor. It also makes science writing very clunky and hard to read.

More passive voice in English papers! Less passive voice in the science lab! Onward!

Re: Impossibly Beautiful

That is an awesome video. I watched it last weekend with my nine-year-old daughter, who was sighing over a picture of Rhianna's hair as we downloaded some music. Nothing like living with a fashion-conscious, body-conscious kiddo to raise your awareness of how much shit is out there, flying right at her.

Re: Question of The Day

One car has a yellow magnetic question mark that says "Question Way" and a sticker for our local drumming group.
