bin Ladin was largely created by Russians and Americans in pursuit of what they considered to be their national interests. I don't know how people can compare the agony we have inflicted on people all over the globe for over half a century with bin Ladin's words and relatively minuscule actions but we do. We do not seem to realize that our support of dictators and violent actions against individuals and nations have consequences. Killing one man is not going to change that fact.

Fortunately, we had a leader in George Bush who consciously (even if by accident) did grievous damage to the country most responsible for modern terrorism by his valiant efforts to destroy our economy, our military and our Constitutional rights. Mr. bin Ladin, if he can tear himself away from all those virgins, has got to look with envy on how Bush accomplished the bin Ladin mission with such a seeming lack of effort. We have indeed become a dysfunctional, bankrupt banana republic.

Which ever Ms. Waters you are, my point was that in order to successfully recall someone they must have done something of a criminal or near-criminal nature, some offense against the obligations of their office that is codified in law as one warranting "recall".

A self-serving agenda, unprovable back-room deals, gross manipulation of processes, policies voted on or allowed by the whole council that happen to be an egregious waste of tax payer funds, etc. do not necessarily qualify as legally recall-worthy offenses.

Gender does not confer knowledge in this case, though there may be good reasons to have segregated classes. Guys may think their sex or watching Rambo movies is education enough but I doubt it.

Any person who is going to be in proximity to firearms will benefit in a very serious way from classes such as these. Then, practice, practice, practice if you want to be able to use these tools safely and appropriately.

As has been pointed out here and elsewhere numerous times, a recall is a strict process that has highly defined guidelines. It is a "last resort" process in our political system, not something that can (or should be) successful because a majority dislike a particular official's behavior.

If we want to be effective we all need to learn the "rules" and play by them. Wishes won't problem-solve.

The idea that our small, rural hospital can be compared to the world-renowned hospitals so close to us on the mainland is absurd on its face. This is empire-building rather than community-serving.

Just one point among many that need to be questioned: modern medicine involves technology that requires economies of scale in order to be remotely affordable. Whidbey General serves our community well, and can serve better by focusing on its appropriate mission rather than trying to be something it is not.

Folks, Ms. Emerson is our fault, especially the fault of those from the middle and leftedness of the political spectrum but also the fault of the political right who could have put up a more competent candidate. Ms. Emerson did not hide her qualifications or lack thereof; she was reasonably honest and straight-forward in the candidate presentations etc. She should be no surprise to any informed voter.

Voters approved her know-nothing, wrecking ball approach over Mr. Dean. That is not Ms. Emerson's fault, though one can hope she will begin to realize that governance is about all, every one of us, and that to destroy government is to leave us in anarchy. In modern terms that means leaving all of us to the tender mercies of corporate America and/or truly unenlightened self-interest.

Langphile, I don't understand how our naturally limited, local health care can or should be competing with the big city, world famous hospitals of the near-by mainland when we're talking major operations or extended stays.

To me, funding improved emergency facilities/staffing make all the sense in the world here, but comparing WGH with, for instance, The University of Washington Medical Center, one hour away, is inexplicable.

Dr. S, how many other potentates in our lifetime have declared they were going to resign, retire, allow elections, et cetera, over and over and over again? Believe it six months after it has happened.

And on the other foot, believe the mayor is no longer going to graciously accept a pension when he has signed a legally binding document declaring his refusal of same. Whether you trust or not, verify.

Daniel, as usual an enviable consistency: when Your Fount of Wisdomness attacks the person/idea (and many seem to equate the one with the other whether it is their own idea or someone else's) all is kosher.

When someone else does it you ride to our intellectual rescue repeatedly and thank goodness for that though I found prefer comics in The Record for my relief.

Ms. Chick, we can (and should in my opinion) question our own opinions and those of others. To me it is truly bizarre to act as if or think that all opinions are equal; we all have equal rights to our own opinions but there is a world of difference between those rights and the logic, reason or veracity of different opinions. So too for the motivations of various writers.

This is a forum for ideas/information to measure itself. A group hug can always be had by just reading the info with which you agree; then, in your mind you will always have a "positive" result.

I find Mr. Freeman fact rather than gas-based but that's neither here or there. A constructive, specific criticism of his ideas would be much more valuable and informative than the generalizations you present since they are truly a "waste of energy and editorial space."

Having personally done business with Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes, a privately owned, local business for a number of years, I recommend their business ethics and professional performance without reservation.

That is just one person's experience but it came about after attempting to thoroughly examine options closer to my South Whidbey home.

GJ, I know Mr. Kelstrom only from his writings here but from my thus-limited perspective he makes an awful lot of sense to me. Is your objection to the fact that he appears to be from the opposite side of the political spectrum to Ms. Baily?

I don't find our Democratic State Senator or either of our Republican State Representatives close to up to the job. We are in serious need of more than place-holding hacks in Olympia.

I've been vacationing quite a bit at the University of Washington Medical Center lately. As virtually every adult knows, we have some of the finest medical facilities in this Country very close by. When we are so close, it seems to me it would make much more sense for Whidbey General to strengthen its Emergency abilities than to try to compete with the giants on the other side.

Both types of institutions have their places.

It is my understanding that "Steve Erickson" is not the name he was born with. A gentleman who has since passed on was making a very good living representing people being attacked by Mr. Erickson. Maybe that is why he wouldn't share the details he supposedly knew of Mr. Erickson's past. It could be just one of those "show us your birth certificate" stories, but I was led to believe there were serious reasons Mr. Erickson changed his name.

The developer is this case has obviously been financially damaged in a number of ways over a long period of time. There needs to be a mechanism within the law to financially damage outfits like WEAN when they attack projects and people solely for the purposes of harassment and/or in an attempt to cause sufficient economic damage that a project will be dropped.

Too often their efforts seem pointed at creating as much pain and suffering for those with whom they disagree while the consequences to themselves are, at best, minimal.

The books of 501-C3 corporations are open; perhaps a thorough examination of WEAN's, not a cursory glance, will explain how WEAN's principals have been able to devote full time in the last quarter-century to attacks on their neighbors.

Ms. Emerson made her limitations quite clear at each of the candidates' forums. She also did not hide the fact that she had lived here a relatively short time, had no background or experience for the job ( a complicated, 'multi-hat important decisions to us all daily' occupation if ever there was one) and was clearly a person who prefers slogans to thought or problem-solving. That she beat Mr. Dean unveils a lot about him and Island County Democrats (of whom I am one).

In short, though less polished and more extreme, Ms. Emerson is a right wing book end to the Green Ms. Homola. Before we get our shorts too tightly knotted consider what County government would be like if either a left or right wing extremist was sitting in Ms. P-J's seat. I don't always agree with her but she is basically a centrist, not an ideologue, and the only person between us and Island County government becoming a complete joke, and not a funny one.

Support your political philosophy but please don't make government the enemy; after all, the government is us.

Thommy, I'm still concerned that the builder got reamed financially and (il)legally in this process; the "cost" to the hamlet was only the money and time they whizzed away stonewalling him. The message to anyone else trying to do business in Langley is unavoidable.

Years ago when we were being attacked by the usual suspects in various ways for trying to build our home on about twenty-five acres on Glendale Road the South End Commissioner at the time could have cared less; ditto the Planning Director.

Some workers in the Planning Department were supportive and we will always be in their debt, especially for trying to protect our building file from letters of support "disappearing", et cetera. Nothing we were doing was anything but totally legal, not that that was a concern of our attackers then any more than it is today.

One official, Commissioner Gordon Koetje, publicly stood up for us and to the degree possible backed off the eco-gangsters within and outside County government. Today's commissioners could take a page from his book about how County government could and should serve and even protect.

Our respects to Mr. Koetje's extended family; let us hope he is not the end of an era.
