I enjoyed XIII, and though I think XIII-2 had a few issues (mostly from a graphical lazy point - see weapons), I think it did a fantastic job at trying to make XIII more appealing to gamers as a whole. Characters were more engaging (admittedly a bias towards Laura Bailey might have something to do with it), and Caius was actually interesting and layered in his personality and motives - despite the over-the-top David Bowieness.

Plotwise I don't have issues, especially since I originally didn't expect much from XIII, since lets face it, games directed by Toriyama tend to have a shallow approach, so I ended up positively surprised when the game's world and myth turned out much deeper than anticipated. XIII-2 did an amazing job at balancing out the much slower pacing of XIII, so it never felt like I waited too long to get plot, and I actively sought to play longer "just to see a bit more". And I'll probably go against everyone else by saying I *liked* the ending, I've read books, watched movies, hell even played games where they may as well have had an "INSERT SEQUEL HERE" sign on them, the only difference is that Square had the balls to physically label it, which isn't exactly the first time they've done so (Xenogears anybody?).

Basically, since this comment is ridiculously long now, I loved XIII, thought XIII-2 did a fantastic job at redressing any issues that I might have had with the original (hell it made me like Hope, who I wanted to murder only 2 years ago), and as much as I want Versus XIII, the HD X (please Square, I so desperately have urges to play it don't make me dust off my PS2 only to play it again twice in the same year), and I would kill for a localised Type-0, I definitely won't complain at having a XIII-3 to tide me over in the meantime. Gimme more Lightning, gimme more Serah, hell give me a Noel/Snow/Hope bromance combo, I'll take anything Square has to offer.

Re: Final Fantasy X HD: Final Fantasy X-2 coming with the package? - Final Fantasy Insight

I can't express how happy I am about this news. I know Final Fantasy X-2 has its detractors, but I can't deny I loved it (though I will admit it had faults). Being able to play International in English is something I can't wait to do, I had a blast on the Japanese one.

Small note, I didn't want to get too trivia-ey on the news, so I thought I'd keep it to the comment. Yadonoki Tower is actually an AlBhed name, with Yadonoki being AlBhed-Japanese for "Maboroshi", meaning "phantasm" or "illusion". A little known fact is that Yadonoki Tower was given an actual English name on some promotional art cards, where it was called the Abrasanym Tower, with the name once again being AlBhed, this time in English, for "Ephemeral". Ephemeral is the name given to the manikins of the Final Fantasy X characters in the Dissidia games, namely Ephemeral Vision, Ephemeral Phantom, and Ephemeral Summoner for Tidus, Jecht, and Yuna, respectively.

If the game comes out in English, it'll be interesting seeing whether or not they call it Abrasanym Tower. I hope they do, it'll be a nice bit of continuity.

Re: Lightning Returns: Some Dead Dunes V-Jump scans - Final Fantasy Insight

It's funny, I chose to relaunch the site at this time of year because the first few months of each year are normally slow on Square Enix news, just goes to show doesn't it? I've not exactly made it a secret over the years that I've not agreed with his decisions and statements, and in particular I'm always reminded of his fairly childish reaction to the difference in sales of Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV on the Nintendo DS, seemingly not understanding that the former had only ever been released once, while the latter had already been re-released multiple times.

There's also been his insistence on continuously porting and re-releasing titles as a method of making a quick buck.

Its hard to not think that this could be a step in the right direction for Square Enix.

Re: Yoichi Wada resigns as CEO of Square Enix

Although I agree a lot with what you've said there, I think Wada had a bit too much passion in his own decisions though, even when they were terrible. I always remember his quite frankly childish reaction to the lackluster sales of Final Fantasy IV in comparison to III on the DS, without ever seeming to take into account that where III had never seen a re-release, IV had seen at least 5 releases (possibly 6).

It was like how he demanded that game developers shouldn't try to develop new and original styles of games, in favour of sticking to tried and tested ideas, following the result of such daring escapades as The World Ends With You.

I'm not saying he's all bad, but I personally think he's done a lot more bad than good over the years. That said, he was a nice constant and any kind of change can be particularly worrying.

Re: Yoichi Wada resigns as CEO of Square Enix

Switching him out after the settling down of the Square and Enix merger is actually probably the best retrospective idea that could have been uttered.

My main issue with Wada has been his insistence on ports and mobile phone platforming since the merger, I know he thinks console gaming belongs in the past, and although I don't have an issue with mobile phone gaming as such it's been his approach to it as a business model.

That said, the upcoming year, as you've said, is exciting. Makes me wonder how much of it was down to him though. Considering it was mentioned that Matsuda was already prepping to take over in June, I can't help but try and guess how long this switchover has been in the pipeline, in the last 6 weeks or so there's been a huge switcharound in Square Enix marketing - the dropping of the mobile phone social gaming model, announcing both KH HD and FFX HD for western releases, finally giving the world Final Mix and International? These are all things fans have been demanding for years and are without doubt a massive boon to Square Enix's PR. The understandable ties to the money it'll make seem like the perfect kind of thinking coming from a man who was the company's chief financial officer, much more so than the decisions we've seen coming from Wada over the years.

Re: Square Enix opens mysterious 10th anniversary teaser site

Although I have to see it certainly is an interesting piece I doubt its real, considering its only about 45 seconds long it repeats way too much.
